I was looking around on velocity because of the triple SC and spotted this.

For June 20, one of the 2 NH flights is "operated by Air Japan". I'm aware that Air Japan is ANA's new LCC subsidiary.

I wonder if this is a precursor ti them launching thr route as Air Japan or if it's some other reason they're flying as Air Japan instead of ANA.

Air Japan has been operating a select number of 787-9s on behalf of ANA since around 2018, including Sydney services. Before that they operated 767s on passenger and cargo services for ANA.

The ANA flights operated by Air Japan use 787-9s that are exactly the same as ANA's and follow the ANA service standards.

From what I can find, it's unclear if this arrangement will continue now that Air Japan has morphed into a LCC.

Nope, you've fallen victim to ANA's totally not confusing naming of their subsidiaries. You see, Air Japan has always been a subsidiary of ANA, which operates charter flights, cargo flights, and also some NH-coded ANA flights (usually within Asia). I believe this is because of cost reasons (think JetConnect). The newly launched Air Japan is also operated by Air Japan, but is also their outward facing LCC brand.

These flights to Haneda from Australia will be on ANA configured planes (although you'll see a small Air Japan decal painted on the side), the only difference is the crew come from Air Japan.
