Air France to charge for exit rows

I imagine that now that this has started, it will spread throughout the legacy carriers like a cancer. Only a matter of time till QF start the same thing I guess.

For those who hadn't heard...

NZ recently went a different way... on the A320/767 aircraft anyway..

As part of the refurb that put in seatback screens/AVOD (gate to gate) the so called "Space +" seats (first x rows of Y) now have 35" seat pitch.. no charge for it... but only selectable at time of booking by elites/KC members..

..and the Y+ seats on the 777/747 now count as Space+ on Trans tasman flights using those aircraft...

NZ reintroduced online seat selection at the same time.... I'm very pleased with that!

So hopefully not all will follow AF etc....

Don't forget Air New Zealand has also signalled the introduction of Y- coming soon! (In an attempt to jam more people into the same space, they are investigating things like 3-4-3 seating on 777s. They may even end up with a bench style seat, which doesn't recline or have any arm rests! I think maybe they are working towards a range of "economy level - hard products".)

According to Sunday Telegraph today, SQ have $50 option of Preferred Seats (exit rows)

I think the dam wall has broken.

Don't think any of them are going to give a discount for middle seats or seats near the galley / toilet

Ouch! Yes, I had forgotten about the proposed 10 abreast Y seating... I believe a number of airlines already have a/c configured that way... and it doesn't sound good to me!!!!

The ability to book and guarantee an exit row would seem to be a good thing to me. makes the airline a more appealing option if not having status which will otherwise enable access

Last time i flew with virgin blue i asked for an exit row seat, there were none left however there were seats in row 1.

The perosn at the check in desk told me that the seats were normally $15 extra however she woild waive the fee..

True.

And close on the heels of announcing seat selection at booking time from next year this could well be another benefit of QF Platinum status eroded away....

I would suggest that the fee would come roughly at the same time. Heck, they may even charge for using the seat picker.

If they are going to follow the true LCC model for seat selection then you would expect a sliding scale fee on seat selection although this fee may be waived for status passengers. Who knows? Wait and see....
