I realise this was announced a few months ago, but I just came across it and don't think it has been posted here yet.

Air Asia X will launch 3x weekly flights between Kuala Lumpur and Mauritius from October. Schedules are as follows:

D7 006 KUL 10:25 - MRU 13:25
D7 007 MRU 02:55 - KUL 14:20

I just had a quick look and on the random dates I searched, flights were around AU$400 return (ex KUL). The Premium Flatbed was selling for around $1,200 return.

From Sydney, the cost would be around $820 return and from Perth just over $600 return, although the connection time in KUL is quite long in both directions. There is a direct flight from PER to MRU on Air Mauritius, however the fares are more than double what Air Asia is charging ex PER.

Air Asia X will give anything a go and suck it and see. Which is good for travelers but doesn't always last.

Personally, Air Asia is a no fly airline, they push things to far for me.

Yes I'm still mad at them for cancelling SYD-DPS. It's hard to trust them again

I agree to an extent. I'd never fly on a new route unless it was in the very immediate future (as in weeks) as they cancel at the drop of a hat. But other infra-Asian routes, no problem and if you buy (for very little money) priority seats, it's just like flying VA.

Air Asia, I have some concern over their safety but otherwise I'll have to take you word on the VA reference as haven't flown VA for over 10 years. :D

D7 and the other Air Asias have really opened up flying around SE asia and beyond. I'm pretty certain if not for them, we'd still be paying $1200 to SIN / KUL in economy.

I'm excited about this new route, will have to see how I can fiddle with my plans next year :D

Looks like a long ground time for the aircraft at MRU unless they have flights from there to elsewhere?

As some had predicted on this thread, the Mauritius route has now been cancelled.

Local lobby behind AirAsia X-Mauritius flight cancellation | The Independent

That linked article is a classic in obscure writing - "it may be related to pressure from a specific ethnic group that dominates the local flagship carrier, Air Mauritius." and "Air Asia X’s pullout is probably due to lobbying from a certain group, who exerted political pressure on the authorities for the suspension of the flights."
