Folks,

I have a philosophy of trying to be familiar with different travel routes, modes of transport & carriers (just in case something goes seriously wrong).

I have just booked an Air Asia flight (OOL to Kuala Lumpur).
Its a bog standard seat - any words of advice re seating/ upgrades/on board service/ luggage allowances & charges??

As I said, am I being brave or foolish?

regards

Bog seat.
Pay for everything.

The pre-booked meals are actually good value and served first - love the chicken satay.

Moa, what were the charges for the luggage?
Can you pre book meals even after booking the ticket?

From my experience you are not being foolish BUT I was travelling for leisure & had no strict deadlines. There have been similar threads re LCC that have seen a variety of opinions, even strong anti-LCC by people who have never flown LCC

Yes you can, just log in under 'Manage my booking' and you can add luggage/meal/etc.

I've flown Air AsiaX a few times Perth - KL. Much better than Jetstar/Tiger Airways - larger, more comfortable A330 which are usually new, seats are about the same as Tiger/Jetstar, service is about the same .

XT - thanks. Have you ever tried upgrading? Is it worth it? If so what did you do & how much was it?

Unlike Jetstar, AirAsia charges the same for food and luggage even after you've bought your ticket.

Also don't forget to use the Empty Seat Option. $35 for two vacant seats on either side of you is unbelievably amazing value.

Aikman, is that $35 for each seat of $35 all up for this option?
PS - any idea of how they luggage fees are calculated?

Upgrading to the Premium seats - it's definitely worth it if you can get it - there are only 12.
It's not J class but still very good for what you pay - lie flat seat meant I got a good sleep. Also 'free' baggage, priority queue & boarding and meals + water.

XT - what does it roughly cost?

Rono,
Upgrades costs depends. Once you book you go to optiontown.com and it gives you an offer.

I have never been successful on Upgrade to J from Syd, but got Empty Seat Option 2 of 3.

When I read the title, I thought you were referring to safety. Apparently Air Asia Indonesia pilots struggle with DRW due to its uneven surface according to insiders. Am thinking am happy to fly to DPS with them, but maybe JQ back.

From memory the upgrade to Premium starts at around $150. I haven't bothered with this upgrade for a while as its very popular now and the odds of getting it are very low.

Hardly anyone does the ESO option so I've had success with it every time. The last couple of times I've paid $35 all up to get a whole row of 3 seats to myself from MEL-KUL. I believe this price fluctuates though depending on how much the normal fare is at the time you submit your upgrade request.

Luggage is charged at 5kg increments. Check your booking at their website.

Here2go,

It wasn't safety that was the intended main thrust but I was inviting members to offer their opinions of my decision to fly Air Asia. Not sure I understand the acronyms.
DRW is Darwin? DPS Depassar? but why JQ back??

All the acronyms are right. DRW has a runway built before modern standards, and therefore pilots who expect a runway to be flat are in for a rude shock as there is a moderate increase in altitude going east to west. Pilots not expecting usually do a hard landing the first time as the ground rises before time. There are some concerns that perhaps too many pilots from Air Asia Indonesia (a separate airline to the one from OOL, but same franchise) struggle with this. Thus going over, no problems, DPS is flat. Coming back, I would rather steer clear of the aircraft with a buckled fuselage, and with pilots that get DRW, ie JQ. Also note that. DRW is only 2.5 hours from Bali. Short trip!
