I am looking at purchasing a J rtn ticket to LAX depart 7th Aug, doing some searching on the QF site, it seems the cheapest option also gains the most in the way of FF points/SC.
My only concern with this approx 12hrs on a A330, is this really doable or am I better off sacrificing the additional points/sc and do the direct option:?:

There's little difference in J between the A330 and the 744. The A380 is another matter.

The drawback of going via AKL is the TT leg, often on a 737.

So you’re asking a forum of frequent flyers and status chasers if you should connect instead of fly direct? :p

While TT on a 737 wouldn’t be an ideal start or end to a journey, if the SC will be useful or the points useful, it’s not too much out of your way.

LOL thinking from the perspective of my own well being..:p
Should be able to survive the hop across even allowing for a 737.

Thanks for that Doc, yes only experienced J on the A380 so know it isn't going to match to that but happy enough if it is comparable to the 744 (from reports I have read it seems decent enough).
Thankfully for when I am looking at coming back direct, J on the A380 is around $1k less than ex SYD.

Wouldn't the cheapest/most cost effective SC earn be SYD-NAN and then NAN-LAX on two tickets? ;)

OK so it's opening you to mis-connects, but that's what good travel insurance is for.

It would mean a 744 in J without lie-flat seats though, but would maximise SC earn for minimal dollars.

I actually prefer the A330 to the 744 in J (unless I have an upgrade request in or am sat in an F seat sold as J). The aircraft feels/is newer. the overhead bins seem more spacious and you can get a seat that no-one needs to climb over you.

I agree. No issues for me with QF A330 in J. The overhead bins are much larger than the upper deck of 747, and are even deeper than the lower deck bins. Seats are the same, IFE a little more reliable and service the same :-|.

Well I don't bother with the IFE ever any more (though I might upgrade to F comes through) and one of my best experiences was on an A330 when the IFE failed so often I ended up with $100 in vouchers :)

Thanks for the thought, just was looking at the QF/AA sites, but definitly will check that out :)
