The smaller guys in smaller countries are the ones who get squeezed first when there is a slow down. I would imagine it's very hard to come back when you start becoming unreliable.
 
I'd imagine it's near impossible to recover from without a big cash injection.
Forward bookings (ie. Cash inflow) dries up
Creditors demand repayment and upfront - eg. Your fuel supplier wants payment for the last 30 days and everything in advance.
