Hi I am thinking about this trip for some time next year and initially it look really expensive to get there. has anyone been or got any ideas on the best way to get there:p

I went to Costa Rica from México, so it was rather cheap to get there. I would suggest getting a ticket to the US, and then US -> Costa Rica.

Costa Rica is amazing, be sure to make the trip to Tortuguero and also Arenal is stunning (which recently erupted).

If renting a car, full insurance with no excess is a must - the roads are not always well maintained. Also, whilst I managed in a Yaris - the 4WD option is recommended!

Have flown to Liberia ( LIR ) Costa Rica these past 2 years as part of a DONE4...AA flys from Miami to Liberia daily and Tamarindo is amazing as is Los Altos De Eros...Its an easy 2 hour flight from Miami and Liberia is a small but very functional airport...Roads are variable so full excess if you rent is highly recommended.

I would pick up a cheap qantas return ticket to LAX/LAS. Then get an AA ticket to San Jose in Costa Rica from there. The reason I say LAX and or LAS is that you can find some really cheap AA tickets from here especially in Business class which you can route through DFW/MIA (In First) to get a whole heap of status credits. Leave a couple of hours between your flights as they will be on seperate tickets or have a free stop over on the West Coast if you want.

The cheapest way from ADL to Costa Rica :) would probably be by flying to SYD first on Jetstar price-beating Tiger Airways, then to SYD-LAX-ATL-LIR with Delta for less than 2 grand return in Y :)
