Hello AFF brain trust,

I'd appreciate some pointer on what is possible in this scenario.

Arriving in LAX on QF en route to BOS

Dropped baggage on TBIT exit for a 12-hr stopover

Q: would I be allowed to check in any additional baggage onto the connecting AA flight (yes, all up it would still be under my WP/OWE allowance) ?

How would I request this additional check in having had a BP in hand ?

Any secret code to mention there ?

And yes, I'd prefer to drop my main suitcase on the way out (would be a normal situation otherwise).

T.I.A.

Ps: QF WP arriving in J, onwards on AA F

Can I clarify your situation, please.

You are flying Oz-LAX on QF J, connecting >12 hrs on AA F. You will have boarding passes for both legs and the checked bag will be checked all the way through. You will collect your checked bag at LAX for customs, then will re-check it at TBIT before you leave the terminal, as normal (this is what I think you mean by this):

Dropped baggage on TBIT exit for a 12-hr stopover

But when you re-commence your join your journey, you wish to check an additional bag LAX-BOS.

If that's correct, I would say the answer would be no. I've asked a couple of times if I can do something like that in the reverse direction (ie add a bag for the TPAC leg) and its been declined.

I think the only way you could do it would be to check-in only for your TPAC leg and collect your main bag at LAX and cart it round with you. Then re-check in for the AA leg, checking in 2 bags this time.

Note there is 'left luggage' at LAX.

Hope I've understood the question properly.

Thank you

Your understanding is correct "......... And yes, I'd prefer to drop my main suitcase on the way out (would be a normal situation otherwise).....".

Well, your experience suggests my only option would be to store the luggage during the 12-hr transit and then have a 'proper' check in for the onward (AA) flight.

They would have a difficult time to verify we are not over the check-n allowance otherwise.

I'll defer to RooFlyer's experience... but my initial thoughts were that this shouldn't be an issue. You simply present yourself at the check-in (even with pre-existing boarding pass) and say you have a bag to check. I wouldn't have thought this was too uncommon... you can short check bags and re add them, or you might want to send your cabin bag as checked luggage... or add a bag after a short overnight...
