AA Miles EU to AU

I am looking to buy 80,000 miles for an F reward from AA but want to clarify something.

The sticky on FT says that when heading from Europe to the South Pacific you need to connect via SIN, NRT, BKK or Osaka.

I can find consistent availability via HKG with CX, QF and BA. Can I work around this by getting a flight from the European mainland to HKG then MEL? Or will AA insist that I go from LHR to SIN/BKK to MEL?

Award Rules (AA) - FlyerGuide Wiki says the same thing. I suppose you can try redeeming it. Let us know how you go here and in the All Partners award thread.

NB, LHR-MLE and then SIN-MEL is only 40k+45k in First (assuming availability). You'd need to get from MLE to SIN...

Thanks for that - read those ones but not really alluminating.

I will give AA a call in BNE to find out.

I read that 80,000 is enough for first for EU to South Pacific when taken with no stopovers.
