As some of you may be aware, us folks over here in Western Australia have to go back to the polling booths today because of a AEC stuff up.

Anyway we have been bombarded with political brochures, news paper and apparently TV adverts (but I don't have access to free to air). In my letter box yesterday was this little gem.

Having misread the about as from Qantas, I opened it up to see what Qantas wanted to tell me. However, to my surprise, it was from my fellow Western Australians Dio Wang, Des Headland and Chamonix Terblanche of the Palmer United Party (PUP) effectively asking me to help stop Qantas being sold to an overseas company by voting for PUP.

Well that was easy, I don't have to fly on QF, their subsidiaries, alliance partners or use them for anything else, just vote for PUP.

So there we go fellow AFF QFFers, lets save Qantas and vote PUP.:D

Do you think they can bring MASA's as well.

Quick someone better tell Clive about MASA's.

I am sure he could score some votes on bringing them back.

Companies normally take a dim view of the brand name/IP being used without permission, Even though it is Clive Palmers mob its a pretty dumb thing to do.

Alan Joyce turned it political buy going to Canberra, he wanted pollies involved now he has got it.

In that case, could Qantas extract a payment from Clive Palmer?
anyway to make some money...:p

Clive has a resort in Queensland that has been really damaged by his thought bubbles. He couldn't run a pay toilet is what I am thinking. Bullying and stupidity make a pretty poor combo.

This paints Qantas in a poor light -- claiming they need to be saved. And further, using their branding in this (or any) way will not be taken lightly by QF I would imagine.

I'm kind of blown away this was approved and actioned by PUP. And if it was approved by QF, I'd be even more dumbfounded.

Agree. It's protected. Branding is quite specific with regards to colour, placement, font, colour, background etc. and can't be used for any purpose without consent.

I agree, hopefully someone in QF picks it up and follows through with the appropriate authorities.

I would be happy for Qantas to leave him at the gate.
Qantas guards it's trademarks so he is asking for trouble. He may have saved his fat cough by leaving the Roo off the print but it had a false implication in it IMO.

QF won't do anything until the outcome of the election is known!

The way the AEC works we should get a result in a month or two!
My wife did the 77 steps to make sure she got her non choices right up high in the numbers.
Having been a scrutineer I saw how few Australians can count that high. About 40% muffed their Senate votes and many did not remember 13,14 and 15 existed in our current numbering system.

LOL, like your wife, I did the 77 step as well. I didn't want someone else deciding where my preferences went. However I regretted doing the 77 steps when I reached around 45.

Seems many are missing the key word. ABOUT
Not really the point. Whether intentional or not, by using their logo this letter gives the initial appearance of being from Qantas. After reading, it could to be inferred that it's in co-operation with or at least on behalf of Qantas.

And even if it didn't, using a company's image in this way is obvious trademark infringement no matter what.

It is precisely the point. Anyone capable of basic reading comprehension (at year 8 level, since my daughter understands that wasn't written by qantas) can understand it is about qantas not by qantas. Especially as the author is clearly stated.

I'll agree it's clearly not written by Qantas. But it shouldn't carry the Qantas logo (minus kangaroo) as it does.

I'm sure if I wrote a blog online about coke but clearly said it wasn't by coke but then used the Coca-cola logo at the top, they'd take exception to its use.

It's carrying the Qantas logo. You cannot use someone else's logo without consent. The word "about" is irrelevant in the world of IP issues.

Is it IP or trademark? How about you all try to agree what you're point is first. In any case Isn't a key element of trademark infringement fraudulent financial gain? Nothing there says the writer of this is pretending to be qantas to fraudulent pretend to be an airline. But love the huffing and puffing. Look forward to people moving onto stealing of money from Sydney water.
