Hi folks
any suggestions for what to do with a 6 hr layover in SYD? Will be coming from AKL, then unfortunately a long wait until the connecting flight to SIN. Both flights are QF. From memory you can only get into the lounge 3hrs prior to departure? And unfortunately not platinum so no arrivals privileges either.

Any ideas welcome!

I've been in QF lounges well before 3 hours sometimes - have never had an issue. From memory, about 1 1/2 years ago I was in the Sydney lounge for 7 hours after I deliberately booked a long layover coming home from LAX so I could have some friends come out and see me.

what time of the day or night is your stop?

Arriving 9am then the 3pm QF5 flight to SIN.
Thought about a day trip into Sydney but right in middle of peak hours. Knowing what the roads are like...

Train from airport to Circular Quay. Wander about the Rocks if you like old stuff, or get a ferry to Manly and back etc. Plenty of time.

If you can do international transit then you don't need to exit airside, which means you can go to the lounge until your next flight.

This will require you to check your bags all the way to SIN in AKL. Obtaining your SYD-SIN boarding pass isn't essential, but no reason why it can't be done in AKL (same day).

If being cooped up in the lounge / SYD T1 for 3-4 extra hours isn't your idea, then something like toowongman suggested is perfectly achievable. Of course, don't dawdle and might as well pay for the train (fastest method, even if expensive).

hi ozkid.. jump on the train just to get out of the airport environment!!! and hopefully a nice day for you to do some powerwalking/sightseeing around Sydney...and if needed jump on/off the sydneybuses 555 free shuttle that runs a 'loop' from central station (at the bus stops along EDDY AVE) ...to/from circular quay along GEORGE ST on a regular basis

You should be able to just do the transit and then use the lounge. There is no 3 hour limit on lounge entry IIRC. Of course, you do need to have a boarding pass and luggage checked through to SIN.

If you do leave the airport, do not use the roads. The train is more reliable. It is also cheaper to take the train for one person than to take a taxi. You can also get a day return train ticket.

Would the same work for a 6h domestic->international transit?

Getting dom & int. boarding passes in your hometown, fly to Sydney, spending 6h in the Lounge and then taking off overseas? The only problem I could see would be the person checking boarding passes at the int. terminal entrance, but I doubt he cares too much about the time.

What are you implying, there is no time limit before you can enter a lounge on any given day, I may have been known to do 7 hours in the F lounge in the past...

Provided you have all the required documentation to leave australia on the day there is no prohibition from entering the international terminal and hence the lounge.

Ok, thanks to you two. I have booked an award flight CBR-SYD-DXB with the latter leg in F. Being only SG this will also be my first visit in the FLounge and I thought some extra time to do some work might be good, as I dont think eating too much FLounge food just before the F on-board dinner would be such a good idea.

Train from airport to Circular Quay hop on Manly ferry there for fabulous cruise across Sydney Harbour have lunch on the pier then return.
