For 45k miles, one could get to SIN from AKL in J. The extra cost would be buying a cheapie for SYD-AKL return for under $300...somewhat better than going SYD-SIN.

Flying 3 hours in the wrong direction is a little silly though, especially when one of the AKL-SIN flight paths would take you pass by BNE at FL340 (or so).

I have noticed that the loads on SQ were very poor recently and this may well be repeated again in the not too distant future.

Haven't look into it to much yet but MEL-AKL-RAR-AKL-MEL for me. However not necessarily at Christmas time. It appears its a resonably good value redeption. I presume it would be on AirNZ? Would it be in Business Premier? Looks very very nice!

Missing the point here, aren't these on NZ not SQ? Haven't yet seen SQ offering discounts on their partners flights!
