Through April 30, 2017, Starwood is offering up to a 30% bonus on the purchase of Starpoints.

The bonus is tiered based on how many points you buy in a single transaction, as follows:

Buy 5,000 – 9,500 Starpoints and save 10%
Buy 10,000 – 14,500 Starpoints and save 15%
Buy 15,000 – 19,500 Starpoints and save 20%
Buy 20,000 – 30,000 Starpoints and save 30%

Also useful if you want airline points or Marriott points

Thinking very strongly about buying to transfer to airline points but currently have no trip planned - gah!

I've fallen into the same trap over the past 12 months with SPG. I rate them so highly and it's hard to pass up these sort of opportunities, but I think I'll
hang in there and hope for maybe another 50% off promo sometime later in the year.

Just did some math and realised buying SPG points outright is better than signing up for the AMEX charge card and paying their annual fee and shuffling points over to airlines. Made me question the AMEX but I still think I get reasonable value out of it.

I think I may hold out for well anything better than 30%

Assuming exchange rate of $A1=$US0.76, I calculate the cost per point at $A2.6c.
I've only ever used Star Points for hotel redemptions. I think 2.6c is about as good a value as I've redeemed based on flexible cash room cost.
I prefer to use Amex points for airline redemptions so not planning to convert SPG other than to Marriott.
Am I missing something or is this offer a 'fairer' pricing opportunity to top up our SPG balance if we're falling short for a redemption?

Yep, agreed. Unless there was something specific in mind for redemption it's better off as a top up opportunity. Unless of course the exchange rate was a lot more favourable. If AUD/USD was closer to parity I would plikely jump on the current offer.

According to OMAAT calculation you can get to 2.45 US cents / points ~~ 3.2 AUD cents with current exchange rate of 0.76 .

I recently have oppotunity to redeem at 3.5 Aud cents per point but most of the time around 2-2.5 aud cents max .

Yeah, the redemption value is very subjective and varies from person to person.

Easy to get good value from Marriott Travel Packages. That's if you can buy 2-3x 30k Starpoints and pool together to convert to 90k Marriott points.

I only use starpoints if I can get at least $A0.05 value from them.Haven't had a problem achieving that either transferring to airlines or using C&P rates.

The Frequent Flyer Concierge team takes the hard work out of finding reward seat availability. Using their expert knowledge and specialised tools, they'll help you book a great trip that maximises the value for your points.

Hi all, can I please get a little help - I'm currently trying to purchase 20K worth of points, but gift them to my mum's account. My account has been opened for a few years now, but her's is brand new (ie less than 12 days). Everytime I try and purchase it gives me an error that my transaction has been cancelled. There's no indication as to what the error might be though. Do you think its probably related to gifting points to such a new account?

thank you.

You will have to wait for your Mum's account to be 14 days old before you can gift it points.

Is the address of each account identical?

The address will not matter if you are simply gifting your Mum points from the points.com website. It will only matter if you are performing a 'household transfer' from your own account to hers.

oh, I wasn't aware i could do that. Might purchase for myself instead then transfer over.
Thank you!

That should work too. Just remember you can only purchase a maximum of 30k starpoints per account per calendar year. So if you have already purchased 30k for your account this year it will not work.
