2024 QF Inflight safety video

Personally, I struggle with safety videos padded out by destination marketing / employee vanity shots / 'celebrity' placements / marketing gimmicks. My eyes roll on the first viewing and by the 20th time I'm actively trying to focus my attention on a book / podcast / show.

The JAL A350 video covers more information in 2 different languages in less than 4 minutes. For me, this is how it should be done.

But, you're starting and ending your timing from the wrong spot. In many aircraft the cabin crew cannot start the video until at least two generators are running...which means two engines. Which, these days, means all of them. Generator switch-overs often cause issues with any running videos.

Couldn't that just be APU + one engine?

I'm very used to the ~5 second loss of audio midway through the video when they switch the gens over. IME it happens just about every time.

SYD is very variable depending on what runway you use, can be 20 mins or can be 2 mins.
Generally most Australian airports have shorts taxi times - I actually find BNEs new runway to have the longest.

I’m not sure about the runway numbers there, but we taxied right down to the end of the runway which juts out into bay, and then took off back towards their terminal. As I said, the weather was dodgy and they were trying to get every aircraft in the air in case it got worse, but by the time we were ready to go it was looking a lot better.

Brisbane International terminal to RWY 19R is the longest, at 7.2Km (from the furthest gate) but in terms of domestic, SYD is the clear winner with T3 to 34R at 6.2Km. Brisbane VA gates to 19R is only 5.0Km.

Well I've taken 6 flights since this new video supposedly launched and it was not shown on any of them; the 5/6 that had a video were still running the centenary version.

Last night the lead FA had obviously had one hell of a day and her head certainly wasn't in the game (I say this because she got almost every drink order wrong during meal service too). When the other FAs stood up to do the safety demo she played the How to Use Wifi Video, about a minute in she realized and reverted to the safety video which because it was OOL and no real traffic delayed take-off by a minute or so.

Had the new version on our flight to Noumea the other day + plus the French version of it, which probably all up took 8 minutes. The French one was much shorter without all the backstories and took just under 3 minutes.

I have a longhaul OBM mate who has told me he flat out refuses to play the new safety demo. He'll either do manual or pre-recorded from the FAP.

As engines start up, their generators come online, and automatically switch out the APU generator(s). Some aircraft have no hassles with the switch, whilst others give a bit of a tantrum. Newer aircraft are better.

6km is basically 3nm. Max taxi speed is 30 knots. So, if nobody is in the way, and you can slalom around the corners, it's only 6 minutes.

So engines start, then manually switch the gens on, which automatically takes the APU gen off the bus.

Reverse on landing, start APU, put the APU gen on the bus, then shut down engines at the gate.

Was hesitant to join the potential pile-on... I finally watched the full version (on YouTube, not a flight) to make up my own mind - IMHO not as bad as I'd been led to believe but a lot of trimming would be needed to make even the condensed version palatable (which I haven't seen yet).

My favourite in recent years is still the 2017 version - very elegantly simple compared to nowadays, with local landmarks (which aren't even tourist traps) and rousing, stirring music. Yes it's >6 minutes but that time seems to go quickly in comparison.

Had the new video for LHR-PER earlier this week. Meh.

Similar to previous videos for me, the safety aspects get a bit lost.

With all of the references to the JAL incident and their videos, I just wanted to also add that the animated factor for them allows them to show stuff like "don't try to grab your belongings", with smoke in the cabin, the line of other passengers getting caught behind them, etc. But it's also a culture thing.

You know that if Qantas did something like this it would be an over-acted drama piece with artistic camera shot choices rather than an actual safety video. You'd think the marketing department could hang up their hats by the time the passenger is actually on the aircraft, instead of still trying to sell to them once they're already sitting in their seat?
