Just received a message from a friend - Jetstar would not let her daughter & niece on flight from Sydney to Melbourne today because one of the girls only had an Australian Passport as photo ID - Jetstar wanted a student ID
Anyone know the rules about ID for domestic flights?

According to the website, ANY is specifically mentioned when it comes to suitable forms of ID and lists Passports as well as Student IDs.

Domestic Check In | Online, Airport, Mobile and SMS Check In | Jetstar Australia

Re: The totally off-topic thread

Was she travelling on some kind of student fare and needed to prove that?

You are having us on, aren't you?

NO.
Here is her FB post

What can I say about Jetstar. Wouldn't let the girls on the flight because Amy only had an Australian passport as photo id and would only take school id. No Melbourne for them today. There were tears and tantrums ( from me). There will be a stern letter to Jetstar on Monday and I won't rest until this atrocity is rectified!

What is a hoot - is that my friend works at the Passport Office in Sydney - of course her daughter would have a passport.

That is absolutely ridiculous. A phone call to ACA or TT might produce the sort of publicity that will embarrass JQ into making sure this doesn't happen again.

Edit: Perhaps start a new thread so we can follow the outcome.

That's just wrong

Re: The totally off-topic thread

Sue says she paid full fare for both girls, getting copy of tickets sent to me. Will start new thread with copy of ticket once I have it.
They are en-route back home from the airport now, so will have to wait a while to get copy of tickets.

Re: The totally off-topic thread

OK, here is a copy of the ticket (I have deleted parts of names & addresses)

Re: The totally off-topic thread

Could it be an age issue rather than an ID issue?

Or this from the website:

children who are not yet attending secondary school (as defined below) will be regarded as unable to travel independently

Jetstar requires that you carry proof that children are currently attending secondary school at check-in

Re: The totally off-topic thread

Will try to tidy that up.
Anyway - spoke to Sue (the mother) both girls are 14. (don't know if this is an issue)
Jetstar wanted Student ID, one girl was able to get copy of Student ID sent to Sue's phone, this was accepted by Jetstar as ID.

The other girl only lives a few miles from airport and said I can go get my passport. Was told - "don't bother, we won't accept it as ID, must be student ID"
School has now closed for the holidays - so no way to get a student ID.

They have now booked on Virgin flights on Monday, the Virgin rep told them they get complaints all the time about Jetstar's ID policy.
Jetstar were only interested in giving them a refund - which will take 14 days to come thru.

This MAY be the issue, as some comment was made by Jetstar about being 14 and still in primary school.

This then poses the question - why does what grade you are in define your capabilities of sitting on a plane?

That's the problem unfortunately. Jetstar have an odd policy of requiring children to be attending high school (rather than just age based like most airlines) to travel alone.

It's a flawed system. Theoretically, what's to stop them asking a 19 year old (or a 50 year old for that matter) proof of attendance of secondary school? It is what it is though.

Re: The totally off-topic thread

I may be a very old Victorian based fossil but since when did 14yo students start having/owning/possessing student IDs?

Also a valid point. I don't recall ever actually having one at high school (from distant enough memory)

Re: The totally off-topic thread

I would've thought a 14 year old would be in high school...
