I was in Quebec last year for 2 full days and felt that was enough to see everything. Nice compact old city for walking around, with some great French food and architecture. Brush up on your French too.
I just came back from a quick week in the south island. We hired a car in Christchurch (didn't go into the city), then drove to Queenstown via Lake Tekapo, Mt. Cook, Wanaka and Milford Sound (not really on the way). That seemed about the right amount of time for those places although we didn't...
I went to Woolies tonight for the first time since the new scheme, I didn't buy anything with a tag so I'm "rewarded" with nothing instead of ~50 QFF points (after december anyway). There didn't seem to be heaps of stuff with tags either. They will lose out on my data too because I won't bother...

LaGuardia is a total hole, reminded me of a dingy old shopping centre that some genius decided to turn into an airport. Newark is a bizarre time warp but inoffensive enough. I found TBIT fine for an outgoing transfer, better than I expected.
I can't recommend a bus tour, but I did the boat cruise around Manhattan Island a few weeks ago which was great. Get there early so you get a seat on the top deck out the back. A hop-on hop-off bus might be good for getting around if your mother will struggle with the steps of the subway.
Here are few of my favourites in NYC that are at the cheaper end (my end):
- Mighty Quinns BBQ in the East Village
- Jacob's Pickles in UWS for southern food
- Smorgasburg food markets at Williamsburg/Brooklyn on Saturday/Sunday for a bit of everything
- 99c pizza slice everywhere :D
In Tokyo...
