I will admit carry-on on VA flights can be a hassle if your not first on the plane (I've flown 170 domestic Y sectors with them last year). On my QF flights this week (x SYD to PER, and to BNE) carry on wasn't an issue very well organised and I'm pretty much last on the plane as a NB!
