Well I did seriously consider Dajop's comments. Have just booked a QF J to Portland which will almost close the lifetime QF gold deal. 50% more expensive than SQ, so feeling a bit dumb. Hopefully QF will have a plane available to cross the pond.

Whoops, thanks Dajop, I don't know much about Star Alliance clearly. I do have a lifetime QC which I picked up for $3K a few years back, so does make LTG less important to me.

Shame about the a350, it runs from Adelaide to Doha, adding a couple more hours to a long trip, meaning a departure from Melbourne earlier in the evening, so a bit tight if working that day.

I've had another look at all of the options Qatar comes in at $8.4K with only one stopover, not having to deal with transit issues at Sydney, a bit over 30 hours each way and great airline reviews. I need 430 QF SCs for platinum so Qatar would fit the bill. Is this a mistake?

I transferred from QF93 to QF 107 in LAX on 20 April (post Boston) Both TB. We had a two hour layover and spent at least 1 hour in the QC. No problems. However, at Montreal 8.00 am on 28 April only 2 of 26 US Customs counters open, so we joined the big snake at the back door!
