Agreed. Sure, if the plane is fully boarded and there is still room up top feel free to put your second bag up there. But in the first instance put the smaller one under the seat in front of you.

Exactly! It's not like boarding earlier will get you to your final destination quicker.

But how much of the need for priority boarding etc a side effect of people bringing excessive amounts of cabin luggage? (It's not like you will get to your destination any quicker based on when you board!) Why? Well the fact it often takes Qantas 30++ minutes to unload checked luggage...

QFF flying jetstar can use the lounges. Not that it helps in places like Sydney Domestic where the lounge is in a different terminal. Also, lounges are not guaranteed to be open if there is no QF flights (eg late at night).

My assumption is that the discrepancy is just another way for Qantas (the group) to soak up unused flight credits. (Because the credits can only be used on the qantas site)

Regardless of anything else, beware that the QC will only be open when there are Qantas Flights around. In December I flew DRW-SIN. My flight was at 15:40. Even though I have QC membership meaning I could have accessed the lounge, it closed around 14:00.
