Has happened to me once. QF weighed our cabin bags at check-in at LAX in Feb 2011. I was over 7kg so had to decamp some stuff to a checked bag. The Samsonite roller cabin bag I'd just bought weighed 4kg empty (!) so I just use it for domestic now. Maybe about to be unsuitable even for that.
