    Hyatt award chart devaluation

They're still the best award program for aspirational properties (Hilton/Marriott/etc run up to 250K per night), but it is definitely one of the bigger devaluations in recent hotel program history. The bigger problem in my opinion is that Chase has tightened up the number of UR it awards (some...

Qantas unveils the biggest changes to status in program history

I would have thought the opposite. By increasing retain thresholds and removing a lot of free/cheap/easy ways to gain extra SCs (loyalty bonuses, PCP rollover, etc), they have committed themselves to retaining DSC offers for the foreseeable future to maintain the ranks. If they also stopped...

    Qantas does Vegas direct

Next time you go to one of those NRL games in Vegas, I encourage you to speak to some other people — anyone really. You'll come across people who have been in the LV region for multiple weeks, as I did when I was on a February flight to SFO last year and surrounded by people heading to the game...

    Qantas does Vegas direct

This 'single weekend NRL game' represents 8% of annual Australian visitors to Las Vegas. It will be even more if the numbers are higher than last year. And that doesn't include all the players, support staff, media, etc (hundreds more people). That's what's driving Qantas' decision. Not some...

    Qantas does Vegas direct

Qantas will be getting some airport fee waivers and that's about it. The route depends on the NRL. If they move to another city, the route will stop. No amount of money from Vegas will keep it going. To suggest otherwise is ridiculous.

    Qantas does Vegas direct

Your factors that supposedly explain the business decision to launch a new route: NYE: 300 visitors CES: 470 visitors (up 36 visitors from the previous year) Australian Christmas holiday period/US winter escape period: Australian visitors to the US in January are down double digit percentages...

    Qantas does Vegas direct

It's definitely the combination of the 300 people flying to Las Vegas for NYE, the 470 attendees to CES and 20,000 NRL fans. Which is the actual factor? We'll never know lol 😂

    Qantas does Vegas direct

Yes, it's absolutely events like CES with its 470 attendees from Australia that is driving this decision lol.

    Qantas does Vegas direct

That's how all their non-charter seasonal routes operate. Eg PER-FCO ends well after the peak holiday season and as a result is very lightly loaded at the tail end of the season. That doesn't mean the route is there to serve the European summer holiday season.

    Qantas does Vegas direct

It has everything to do with the NRL. It is explicitly stated in the press release. Around 20,000 Australians travel to the event. That's a massive number of travelers. Non-frequent travelers turn it into their major holiday.

Qantas unveils the biggest changes to status in program history

If the whole point is to streamline status and remove the PC program, I don't think there will be any replacement on the lounge access front. SC earn on award flights is different as they specifically mentioned that feature is under consideration for retention in some form.

Qantas unveils the biggest changes to status in program history

There is a big overlap in the Venn diagram. And indeed, it's a big devaluation for those people. As with all forms of status, people want the line to be cut off just behind them 😂

Qantas unveils the biggest changes to status in program history

With the loss of the loyalty bonus, the extra 200SC required to retain, the loss of PCP 100SC rollover and Green Tier 50SC earn (offset, at most, by the 140SC earn on ground), and the possible devaluation of SC earn on award flights, I think a lot of WPs will be forced to consider whether it is...

Qantas unveils the biggest changes to status in program history

PC+ members are also credit card churners, so it's more of a straight devaluation for these people. Instead of getting Qantas Club, they now get a few lounge passes.

    Qantas does Vegas direct

It's basically just a way of ferrying people to and from NRL Las Vegas, who come a bit before or stay a bit longer for tourist purposes. Doesn't signal much more than that. When I flew to SFO last year around the time of the tournament, the flight was packed with NRL supporters.

Qantas unveils the biggest changes to status in program history

I don't think it's a massive change at the lower level. A 'points hacker' could get 100SC rollover per year from dumping 350K points into QFF and 50SC from Green Tier with a few tricks. Now they're having to earn across a big number of categories to get 140SC.

Qantas unveils the biggest changes to status in program history

Fair enough. It would be an interesting result. If that is the case, it is the opposite of a soft landing — it is in fact a super hard landing. The WP with 1000SCs is treated 15% worse (no 150SC rollover) than the SG with 1000SCs.

Qantas unveils the biggest changes to status in program history

They haven't said, but they roll things out by membership year. My guess is they'll announce in 2026 that the new requirements commence at the start of your next membership year in 2027 (ie the first people to get hit with the requirement will be the people with January or maybe February renewals).

    Excess Qantas Status Credits

Have a look at today's announcements. They'll be introducing this feature soon, but not soon enough for your current membership year.

Qantas unveils the biggest changes to status in program history

You'll get 150SC to start your new year (50% of the 300SC above the 700SC Gold threshold).
