I've had good success in VA J flying forward if there's room with HLO. Similar to you though - I always fly out of SYD Friday arvo and QF almost always offer fly ahead through the app, usually by late morning.

We had booked to fly QF F BNE>SYD>LHR then on to ARN with BA. There tyuy rewards last minute for EK F BNE>DXB>ARN which would've been ideal - but didn't want to leave it...
I would kind of expect at Platinum Plus that they would attempt to contact you about making that connection rather than assuming. Maybe I am expecting too much though.
I've had personal phone calls for this and boarding just as WP with QF.
I don't expect to have my flight called in the lounge, make everyone wait to make my way down, and then move through the groups.
If I want to be boarding with group 1 I make sure I'm at the gate 10 min prior rather than stuffing my face with beer and snacks 😅
