I had a similar experience with QF93 several months ago which was originally an A380 upon booking. After the aircraft changed to a B787 I could not re-select the new seats I had been allocated because there simply were none as the smaller plane was now full.

your booking class for flight 1 may not have been in an earn category for Qantas points. Not all Qatar booking classes earn Qantas points despite being a partner. Best to check first, info is on Qantas website

Like MELso says......you need to look for reward seats not points plus pay seats. Reward seats on Jetstar flights incur a lower points redemption than most comparable reward seats with other airlines on the same route hence can be good value.

BazzaCoffs may not necessarily be pursuing a Oneworld booking but a route that does in fact go around the world utilising reward seats that may not include Oneworld partners. Having said that, the answer to the 'adding segments' question would be the same.
