New Qantas promos including double status credits (book by 3/9/25; travel 4/9/25 until 22/8/26)

Oh wow, I wish I'd seen this earlier, or that they'd done this earlier! I was holding off for a DSC promo to book my Christmas trip, then when I saw DSCs no longer count towards Lifetime Status, I went ahead and booked a cheaper fare on Qatar instead yesterday!! So although this reversal is...

Article: Why is Dynamic Currency Conversion Even Legal?

I'm not sure where you were in the UK, but most bank ATMs in the UK are fee-free withdrawals for everyone and there are still plenty of them in London at least. As in most countries, avoid the non-bank ATMs in convenience stores etc if you can as they will usually have ridiculous fees.

Card payment sucharges banned in Australia from 2026

Even as an Aussie who now lives in a surcharge-free part of the world, whenever I'm back home in Australia it takes me a few days to adjust and realise how widespread and sneaky the surcharging has become since my last visit. The first few times I get hit with it I think the staff have made a...

    QANTAS Cyber Incident

The AF/KLM hack has barely made the news (I guess the media have become bored of breaches) but from the details I've seen it sounds very similar to the Qantas hack:

Card payment sucharges banned in Australia from 2026

These merchants mustn't like tourists spending money with them. Australia is currently at the extreme end of the global spectrum in terms of card surcharges. Europe, Canada, the UK and the US all have a ban on debit card surcharging. Europe and the UK also have a ban on credit card surcharging...

Card payment sucharges banned in Australia from 2026

Fees for transactions in Australian dollars when a merchant's bank or payment processor is located or registered overseas? What on earth! How is that allowed?! If I ever move back to Australia I'm keeping my UK cards, most have barely any fees for anything!

Card payment sucharges banned in Australia from 2026

Is that just Amex or regular Visa/Mastercard as well in Australia? In the UK, most cards are now 0% foreign currency fee except for Amex

Card payment sucharges banned in Australia from 2026

What a complicated mess. Like ATM withdrawals in the EU, they can charge different fees depending on the type of card you have, and foreign-issued cards usually get charged fees while an EU-issued card will get a fee-free withdrawal. At least the EU & UK's surcharge ban is simple and our...

Unfortunately I was finding it a bit hard to read everything in the new style and font, but thankfully someone much more helpful directed me to the instructions and I'm now back on Classic Style.

I'm not so sure. My BA Amex earns at a higher rate than my Qantas one did, and it earns Avios which are worth more to me than QFF points.

Card payment sucharges banned in Australia from 2026

So removing surcharges in Australia causes our banks to throw a tantrum and threaten to entirely dismantle rewards programs and remove Apple Pay! Maybe the blindsided Aussie bankers should open their eyes to the rest of the world. Surcharges barely exist outside of Australia & NZ, and banks in...

Card payment sucharges banned in Australia from 2026

Cashback debit cards are fairly common in the UK, but the really big thing here is bank switching offers. Banks will pay a sign up bonus equivalent to $300-$400 if you switch your account to them using a service that closes your old account and redirects your old account number and any direct...

Card payment sucharges banned in Australia from 2026

Card surcharges have been illegal in the UK and Europe since 2018, and there's still plenty of cards with points bonuses and cashback offers.

The media chase clicks and ratings, so for whatever reason they must think there’s not much interest in sticking with the story.

    QANTAS Cyber Incident

Unfortunately it could happen to anyone anywhere. Obviously the Australian media isn’t reporting on the others, but the same group that breached Qantas also recently got into M&S, Harrods and Co-Op in the UK, then WestJet and Hawaiian Airlines, and several insurance companies in the US. They...

Optus new $50 SIM only with roaming

Through clever marketing the telcos have managed to convince most people into thinking they need huge amounts of data, and have somehow made people willing to pay extra for data they won’t need to use.
