I had a VA J reward ticket on SQ in May DXB-SIN, which cost 74,000 points and $440. Best I could get at the time. However, I was browsing Google Flights today and found a UL J fare DXB-CMB-KUL for around AU$860, which was cheaper than most PE fares. So I booked it and cancelled my VA reward...

One thing that VA does (much) better than QF. It returns points immediately after cancelling a reward booking, and processes the cash refund straight away.
