I use Skype. Calls from Skype to phones around the world are very cheap.

    leaving your house clean?

If you want to try the air purifier, you could buy one of the Belkin plug attachments so that you can turn it on and off remotely, for instance turning it on a day or two before you get home. If you want to try the open windows, you could get security screens for them.

    Life Time Silver

Congrats, Jessica :) I just reached LTS a month ago myself and was quite pleased, too.

Heston to bring Fat Duck to Melbourne for 6 months

I ate at Dinner by Heston in London once. The savory porridge entree was interesting and very worth a try. The chicken main tasted just like Red Rooster. I can't even remember my dessert. Overall, I'd say it didn't live up to my (extremely high) hopes.

ATO (tax office) payments by credit card

So currently, I have: a Woolworths Everyday Rewards card, a Westpac Earth Platinum Plus account and an Amex Ultimate Qantas card. I should get rid of one of them, but in the meantime, can someone tell me whether any of these will give me reward points for an ATO payment?

    Noise Cancelling Headphones

I took earplugs to the last concert I went to at a venue that I know tends to have the volume at hearing-damaging levels. It was actually easier to follow the lyrics with the ear-plugs in that without (otherwise, the volume was just overwhelming). Unfortunately, it somehow changed the quality of...

    Poor form or normal?

Yep, that sounds like treating it as theft after it has been reported to the airline :) Still, I wonder what the police guidelines are regarding what they do and don't respond to, when it comes to petty crimes. A rock through our front window when no-one was home? No. Theft of $50 through a...

Qantas Upgrades - Successes or Failures (post results)

Re: QF Upgrade Success Rate I've had near 100% success Y-J when flying alone. Almost all long-haul international. I've had 0% success Y-J when flying with my husband.

    Poor form or normal?

I saw it happen once, in one of the Heathrow BA lounges. In that case, it was a group of drunken young men. But I agree with others that it is plain theft.

What are your favourite hotel booking websites?

I used to like hotelclub for the rewards to be used against the cost of my next booking, but recently, I have found that the prices are high enough to negate the benefit of the reward %. I'm back to bookings.com or wotif or Serko (the govt travel agent site). Serko gives less info and fewer...

    https://getcreditscore.com.au

I tried it and got a "very good" 789. I'm not sure why it isn't "excellent": perhaps because I have kept my mortgage account open to act as a flexible line of credit, despite having it effectively fully paid off via funds in an offset account? Or perhaps because I have three different credit...

Virgin and QF to allow gate to gate use of handheld devices from tomorrow

Those who won't bother are the same people who didn't bother last week. There is a personal incentive to put devices into flight mode, however: leaving it out of flight mode pretty much ensures that the battery will be drained by the time you get to the other end of the flight. I have forgotten...

    Outrageous hotel charges

What annoys me is when bottled water is left on the bedside and you have to ask whether there is a charge for it, or find out only when you get your bill at the end of your stay. I appreciate it if the hotel has a free or coin-op guest laundry. Okay if they don't, but in that case I expect (a)...

Online survey+interview suggests qff points on the way out at Woolworths EDR

The QFF points are the main reason I do most of my grocery shopping at Woolworths. Parking outside our nearby Coles is easier, and they keep their checkouts better staffed. It will be an easy switch if they do cut off the points.

    Chip and PIN cards

Logging in to the Amex website and trying to set up a pin on my Amex Qantas Ultimate card, I get the following: I expect we will get a lot of confusion from merchants as they have been told that all cards should have pins. I note, though, that my card worked recently in England without a pin...

Electronic devices restrictions to be lifted

I travelled BA London to Amsterdam in late May. At that time, on that route, there was a very short electronic device ban at each end of the flight.

Electronic devices restrictions to be lifted

It is more like 20 mins. I guess whether that's "very similar" depends how addicted you are to your devices. (BA used to have the ban in place for the same period that Qantas still does, but they have reduced it substantially - perhaps it's even 5 mins now: much shorter, anyway).

Electronic devices restrictions to be lifted

I'm just back from an around the world trip, and most airlines seem to have already lifted - or largely lifted - the ban on electronic devices during landing and takeoff. Qantas - ban still in place British Airways - ban much reduced (now only for about 10 minutes at the start of take-off and a...
