    ATO Credit Card Points Summary

I've received the following offer from Westpac: "Receive 10,000 bonus Qantas Points when you pay your tax bill with your Earth Platinum Plus American Express® card." I usually get a refund rather than a bill, but it's nice to have up my sleeve.

Tell Me Where To Go (Italy)

My favourite parts of Italy are Venice (I expected it to be over-rated, but it isn't), Sicily, Sienna and Rome.

Now Boarding ... Chicken or Beef?

Re: Calling the Flight Attendant I've been offered the remains of an open bottle at the end of a business class QF flight. I was the only passenger who had had a glass of wine from the bottle, and the attendant said it would have to be thrown away otherwise. I appreciated it. This was some...

Concierge Services - Does anybody use them?

They can be handy for booking accommodation when you don't have time to look through the options yourself. They won't get the *best* deal or the *nicest* place, but they'll at least cast a human eye over the options and choose something reasonable. The other time that I have found them useful...

    "fly ahead" with Qantas?

I am currently gold, but have had a fair bit of success even when silver QC. As long as you are moving from a heavily booked flight to an earlier flight with a lighter load.

Now Boarding ... Chicken or Beef?

I imagine it's due to demand. YMMV, but I don't know anyone who prefers Diet Coke to Coke Zero.

    Watch this space

I used it to get into the QC on my last trip, rather than digging my phone out. Of course, it ended up taking longer than the phone would have because the lounge staff were keen to admire the watch :) The alerts and info about upcoming flights also work well, but I also have the TripIt app...

RTW trip: which loyalty scheme to join? Any other tips?

It's a bit hard to tell from the Diners Club web pages. Would a Diners Club card give me free access to the lounges, or is there an access fee? If I pay for a supplementary card for my husband, will that get him access, too?

Getting toward the front of the plane

I've noticed just recently that the seats I can select on Qantas flights have been a bit further back. In the past, whether I've been Silver or Gold, for some reason, I've usually been in the front 10 rows, often about row 5, and almost always with an empty seat next to me. But just recently...

RTW trip: which loyalty scheme to join? Any other tips?

Thanks everyone! Some really good tips here. I have sent out a couple of emails to star alliance airlines asking for a status match, and if those don't come through, I will ditch my Amex Ultimate Qantas card (which I have been meaning to do for a while) and invest in a Diners Club card instead...

RTW trip: which loyalty scheme to join? Any other tips?

Thanks. I have edited the OP to add fare status details. All metal, unless otherwise noted. I'm not sure what all the status codes mean, but it is probably all (or nearly all) discount economy. How would I go about trying to get a status match to Star?

RTW trip: which loyalty scheme to join? Any other tips?

My husband and I have a long service leave "trip of a lifetime" coming up (20 May-15 July) and I thought I'd draw upon all your expertise to get some advice. We're both Qantas Club members (and I'm SG at least until the end of May), but the price difference between a One World air fare and the...

    Watch this space

Sounds like most in this thread will think me a sucker, but I have pre-ordered an Apple Watch and am looking forward to getting it. I'm glad there is a Qantas app for it and particularly like that the new app will have baggage carousel info. It would be a nice addition if it provided the option...

    Travel insurance

Agreed. In my case, the travel insurance is part of my calculation in deciding to get a card, but not the only factor. Reward points are important, the annual fee is important, but the free flight I have found I usually do not use in practice, because of all the restrictions on its use.

    Travel insurance

I'm planning an around-the-world trip, so I decided to compare the travel insurance offered with my two credit cards: The American Express Ultimate Qantas (AUQ) card and the Westpac Earth Platinum Plus (EPP). The direct-from-Amex card comes out of the comparison looking totally inadequate. I...

Taking ownership of the middle seat on a QF 737-800

I'll put my stuff in a shared middle seat and expect the person on the other side to do the same, if they care to. I try to keep my stuff to my side of the middle seat, at least until it's clear that the other person won't be using their half. After eating, I'll pull the middle tray down and put...

Lonely Planet guides - do you use them?

They used to be essential, but I hated how heavy they were in my luggage, and the restaurant reviews were always outdated. These days, I rely on Wikitravel and the like instead.

    Extra legroom seats for shorties

I think that's what they have on BA flights: a set bag that you can put your feet in. Better than nothing, but not as good as perfectly-sized hand luggage. I have a roller-bag that will *just* fit under the seat in front on larger planes, and it makes a great footrest.

Do you learn the local language

It depends how long I will be there, how long I have to prepare, where else I will be going on that trip, and how widely English is spoken in the places I will be visiting. If I am visiting one destination on a trip, I will do my best to learn some key phrases before I go - especially if I will...
