My comment would be that if you are pushing towards 12-14kg with HLO then don't do it. HLO is great when it is about 7-8kg, so carrying a backpack in/out of metro stations, trains, buses, cars etc is manageable and definitely the way to travel (we do this all the time). But if it is 14kg, then...

Same boat. It's the SQ flights (mainly Y) which have me requalifying as VA WP each year, and I need that status in order to make flying int Y bearable. As a consequence, I also choose to fly VA domestically where possible. So it's self-defeating.
