These are shockers, that I hadn't heard about before. https://www.atsb.gov.au/sites/default/files/2025-11/AO-2023-043%20Final.pdf

I prefer sneaking around in silence. Do a search for a YouTube channel called Growling Sidewinder.

Space Junk and ramifications for airlines

The coughulative surface area of all the cars in the world would have to be many times that of all the aircraft...so it should be more likely to hit a car. It's not something I'm going to lose any sleep over.

UPS MD11 crash on take-off in Kentucky

It's a freight operation, so I expect that their schedules aren't quite as tight as passenger ops. And I can't imagine any short term maintenance work that could cause an engine to depart. I think it's a fair assumption to say that it happened as a result of the separation. It's unlikely to be...

It's not rare at all. You can pretty much guarantee seeing it when flying in the bigger cloud masses.

UPS MD11 crash on take-off in Kentucky

They would have done nothing about the fire, etc. The issue that has to be dealt with first is keeping the aircraft under control, and then hopefully projecting the flight path somewhere reasonable. Once off the runway, the wing is producing lift, but also masses of induced drag. That's a...

UPS MD11 crash on take-off in Kentucky

I wouldn’t expect you to get any warnings at all. Almost everything is inhibited from roughly 100 knots until around 400’. Beyond that though, the major components of the fire system are no longer attached to the aircraft. The #1 engine display may disappear, or go off scale. All warnings are...

So... what car do you guys drive when not flying?

We've just replaced our Range Rover Sport with a Golf GTI. Sold the caravan, so no need for a tow vehicle any more.

Not really, other than a lot. The INS is an offshoot of the aircraft's inertial reference system, which in turn provides us with attitude information and accelerometers for the FBW. The GPS is a separate system, but they come together via the FMCs. There would be multiple black boxes involved...

We flew around the world quite happily just using INS with VOR/DME updating.

This isn’t a risk tolerance issue. It’s a really poor bit of flying. It gives a spectacular snippet of video which the internet then mistakes for the exact opposite of what it is.

Effectively zero. The recent media noise was pretty obviously a balloon.

Both pilots have their hands on the controls. My guess would be that the bloke on the right is ghosting the captain. Engines being controlled by a flight engineer. The amount of throttle movement is extreme. A tad rough I guess.

    Taking the slow boat.

No. I just make sure the shutter doesn’t go below 1/100th. Even in the dark churches. A tripod for the morning/dusk shots.

Quite real. The spotters at London periodically catch people giving examples of how not to land a 380.

    Taking the slow boat.

That's what I expect most people use, and I'm suggesting yet another mode, which most people never consider. It allows me to ensure that I get a shutter speed AND f stop that is appropriate to what I'm doing, without having to worry about the shutter becoming too slow, or the depth of field to...

    Taking the slow boat.

There were some groups who were obviously from cruise ships, but as it was only me and my guide (a lovely lady BTW), we just skipped ahead of them. Very pleasant. For those interested, they're all shot on a Nikon D850, using either a 16-35 or 24-70 mm lens. In the trickier light conditions, I...

    Taking the slow boat.

After yesterday's trip to Pompeii, I'm now back in the churches of Rome.

    Taking the slow boat.

A tale of tours. We've booked three tours on this trip. All with the same company, and directly booked, not via a third party. The first was a walking tour at the Coliseum and Forum in Rome. Crowded venue, but well managed, and worked out well. The second was to the Vatican. Unfortunately King...
