It doesn't matter if it's checked through, because if it's only checked to SYD, then you can check the luggage in at the transfer desk for the SYD-BNE domestic leg on Qantas rather than just dropping it off at the same transfer desk.

I'm QF WP on a Y booking. BNE-SYD-DFW-DCA-LAX-BNE. DFW-DCA is on AA, DCA-LAX is on AS. I can select MCE, but it took so much faffing about to get that PNR/get the reservation recognised by the AA system, only middle seats are left. So I'm sticking with an aisle seat further back.

I tried that, it didn't work. The PNRs I have for the booking and what showed in the BA website just weren't accepted in the AA app or website. Only the QF ticket number worked in the AA app and only then could I see the AA PNR. I have a total of three for this one booking. By the looks of it, 1...

I used this method the other week to move 8 rows forward* on an AA flight (QF codeshare) in Y for an upcoming trip. Perhaps due to codeshare, none of the PNRs I had were recognised by the AA website or app, but the QF ticket was. *Forward compared to what was available to select in QF's MMB.
