I just wanted to say thanks to all who have contributed since my post. Some very useful tips esp the QFF tip. I would prefer to stay hotels but given the prices where they are sitting (and for what is being offered) it is impossible to justify. So i will give Airbnb a go.

According to Geoffrey Thomas (sigh) QF is very popular and a great airline. I, myself, would look to fly someone else especially at the prices they are currently trying to shake out. Why not consider going via Asia?
