    Ask The Pilot

We flew around the world quite happily just using INS with VOR/DME updating.

This isn’t a risk tolerance issue. It’s a really poor bit of flying. It gives a spectacular snippet of video which the internet then mistakes for the exact opposite of what it is.

Effectively zero. The recent media noise was pretty obviously a balloon.

Both pilots have their hands on the controls. My guess would be that the bloke on the right is ghosting the captain. Engines being controlled by a flight engineer. The amount of throttle movement is extreme. A tad rough I guess.

No. I just make sure the shutter doesn’t go below 1/100th. Even in the dark churches. A tripod for the morning/dusk shots.

Quite real. The spotters at London periodically catch people giving examples of how not to land a 380.

    Taking the slow boat.

That's what I expect most people use, and I'm suggesting yet another mode, which most people never consider. It allows me to ensure that I get a shutter speed AND f stop that is appropriate to what I'm doing, without having to worry about the shutter becoming too slow, or the depth of field to...

    Taking the slow boat.

There were some groups who were obviously from cruise ships, but as it was only me and my guide (a lovely lady BTW), we just skipped ahead of them. Very pleasant. For those interested, they're all shot on a Nikon D850, using either a 16-35 or 24-70 mm lens. In the trickier light conditions, I...

    Taking the slow boat.

After yesterday's trip to Pompeii, I'm now back in the churches of Rome.

    Taking the slow boat.

A tale of tours. We've booked three tours on this trip. All with the same company, and directly booked, not via a third party. The first was a walking tour at the Coliseum and Forum in Rome. Crowded venue, but well managed, and worked out well. The second was to the Vatican. Unfortunately King...

    Ask The Pilot

Many times, in 767, 747 and 380. That was a viable touchdown method in the 747, but not the 380. So, the reality is that it is an appalling landing. At some times of the year they are.

Back to the bridge at dawn.

From Captain Steve I think. I'm afraid that I don't think much of his theories. I don't think you could get a 747 to porpoise. Porpoising is a pilot induced event. The best solution would be to go around. Otherwise, hold the controls steady, and just live with it. If all the wheels touch down...

    Taking the slow boat.

There's only a couple of churches here...plus the Romans..

Managed to drag myself out of bed for a dawn walk.

And for a change of pace, with no crowds, but plenty of Roman ghosts, there's Ostia Antica. About an hour on the train from the centre of Rome.

    Taking the slow boat.

Visited the Vatican, but so did King Charles, so sadly, much of it was shut to us, and that concentrated the crowds as well. A box ticked, but I wouldn't bother trying again.

    Taking the slow boat.

I haven't yet managed to drag myself out of bed for early shots in Rome. Evening was the best I could manage.

    Taking the slow boat.

Off to a new city now. Today was scouting spots for some dawn shoots in the coming week. Our Sistine tour has been cancelled. Apparently the King of England is visiting. You'd think he'd share....
