Amtrak a few tips and warnings

We've done a few trips. We once had a north east rail pass and used it to travel from NYC to Boston, Lancaster, Niagara, Washington, Philadephia etc etc. It was great value. We've travelled from Memphis to Chicago, Chicago to San Francisco (Californian Zephr) and LA to Seattle (Coast...

    Best Travel Sim card?

Like others on this thread, we use the vodaphone $5 international roaming (free in NZ). We also use the family sharing option so my plan costs $50 per month and partner and daughter's plans are $25 per month (and this gives us 10 gb/month in 50 countries and $300 worth of calls). If I travel...

Phoenix, Arizona - Currently so hot & Flights Cancelled

They do that on the tour buses too. Start the day with the bus as cool as possible and by late afternoon it was over 30 degrees inside the bus with aircon full on. When we arrived at our hotel (one of the best of the tour) each room had its own external courtyard and jacuzzi - but they were...

Saudi Arabia, Egypt, Bahrain and UAE cut diplomatic ties with Qatar.

Thank you - good to hear. I'm flying to Europe on Friday :) Edit: just checked my outbound flight and it has been extended by 30 minutes (Adelaide to Doha) so I only have 60 minutes transit time. Hopefully that will be enough.

    Spare amenity kits for charity

Good topic! Those amenity kits build up over time and you get to a point where you realise that you don't need them! I have previously donated mine to some local charities as well. Even parts of amenities kits are useful to someone homeless (especially things like socks and toothbrushes).

You know you are a frequent flyer when ...

I understand the different situations. I would have thought that the EK Chauffeurs would still contact you on an international number. I fly for work and for fun :) Work is international and I need to keep the same number so colleagues can contact me. I used to have two phones (work and...

You know you are a frequent flyer when ...

Agree except we have moved on from the "swap out sim card". With vodafone's offer of $5 per 24 hour international roaming - $0 for NZ - I've stopped the sim card swap :) International Global Roaming | Vodafone Australia 24 hours for $5 means you can use your normal at home credits and with...

    Superannuation Discussion + market volatility

We first saw an independent financial advisor about 15 years ago. We didn't do what was advised and when we returned a few years later, he asked us if we would like to know how much money we would have made if we had followed the suggestions. (Answer - no thanks). We go back to see him every...

Saudi Arabia, Egypt, Bahrain and UAE cut diplomatic ties with Qatar.

Hi Himeno, I noted in post #57 this "According to Flightradar24, Bahrain sent notified pilots that it will limit flights to and from Qatar by Qatari aircraft through its airspace to a single air route. This means, even if Qatar Airways isn’t grounded, it will be subject to heavy air traffic...

Saudi Arabia, Egypt, Bahrain and UAE cut diplomatic ties with Qatar.

True- at least they have apparently (for now) instructed pilots as follows: "According to Flightradar24, Bahrain sent notified pilots that it will limit flights to and from Qatar by Qatari aircraft through its airspace to a single air route. This means, even if Qatar Airways isn’t grounded, it...

Saudi Arabia, Egypt, Bahrain and UAE cut diplomatic ties with Qatar.

Thanks for the info rooflyer (I'm flying QR Aus to Europe later in June) From this article, it appears that Bahrain and UAE cannot legally shut off airspace to QR, but they can refuse landing rights. Saudi can shut off airspace as well...

    Quick & Easy P1 Requalification

Wow! Impressive and dedicated! Well done! I did an Auckland trip a couple of weeks ago - about $1900 for 480 SC (J from CBR via Sydney with DSC) - so $3.96 per sc. I stayed for the weekend and had some fun though and used points for my DD to travel with me. (like your horse references - I...

    Another explore gold (Flybuys) offer

Just wanted to add that initially I thought the invitation was because of my QFF WP status but reading through the thread it clearly isn't targeted. As a life time gold on QF, I am in the position to try VA with a good offer such as this one so that I have flexibility in the coming year...

    Another explore gold (Flybuys) offer

arrrrghhh - I got the offer too but didn't respond in time (was travelling). I'm Qantas WP/LTG and I am travelling next month to Europe for business on Qatar with VA domestically (I class Qatar, D Class VA). Two questions - Is there any point in ringing VA and asking for the offer (or a...

    The demise of first class

I'm wondering what the current polly entitlements scandal will do to the F class arrangements. When there was a crackdown a couple of years ago on pollies and public servants accepting upgrades, I scored two A380 F (opup) upgrades from paid J class (one with partner). I'm hoping the same...

    Mystery flights

Red Balloon sells them - from $1100 for flights for two people, two nights 4 star accommodation and transfers https://www.redballoon.com.au/search?q=mystery I won one a couple of years ago and sent my DH and BIL off as I was too busy with work. We received an envelope 24 hours before from...

Avoid 24J PE seat on QF A380 unless you really need the legroom

Yes 24J is next to 24K - I mean 24b is is the same type of seat (with no storage and the problems mentioned) as 24J. In my opinion 24 A and K would be great because you have plenty of room to get up, don't get stepped on and they have side storage. Also 24 D and F would be good. Yes in all...

Avoid 24J PE seat on QF A380 unless you really need the legroom

Agree - but I usually take a largish but soft carry on bag (rather than a carry on suitcase because in J upper deck seating it means I can stuff it into the side bins for easy access). Lesson learnt. :)
