If flying on a " Red e Deal" is it possible to ask for a pointe upgrade at checkin?
Unless you get a special offer from QF you can't upgrade a red e-deal internationally.
Yes, you can always ask for one, the worst they can do is say no.
Of course red-e-deals are not known to be upgrade friendly, so chances are that the answer will most likely be no.
Also, with QFi, you have to register for the points upgrade at least 24 hours prior to travel (assuming your fare is eligible, which it sounds like it might not be). It's not like QF dom where you can try your luck on the day.
They will now do international on departure upgrades - with some conditions -> Frequent Flyer - Using Points - Flight Upgrades - International Flight Upgrades
AFF Supporters can remove this and all advertisements

Ret on saver also 10 days later.

Is it possible to see if there are any PE seats that may be available for a points upgrade?

You can use flightstats to check seat availability.
Have a read of this post: http://www.australianfrequentflyer....ngs-upgrade-probability-25311.html#post354294 - the second party of it under TIP refers.
Thanks Mr_O, that link Flight Availability By Route only shows about 4 days in advance. I'll come back and look at it later. I was wondering if I bought her maybe a PE seat whether she might get really lucky and get into J, she'd love that.
