40A and 40K weren't available on the 744 QF11 from SYD-LAX , but 40D was, and although I'm usually a window flier, SeatGuru's writeup swayed me.

SeatGuru Seat Map Qantas Airways Boeing 747-438 4-Class Vers. 1 (744)

Seats 40 D,E,F,G have a lot of extra legroom due to a 12 inch cutout in the bulkhead wall, but they have limited recline. The tray tables and personal TVs are in the armrests, making the armrests immovable and slightly reducing seat width. There is no floor storage during takeoff and landing.

But then I came across The Qantas Source which had something else to add.

747 4 Class Kangaroo Seat Map.

Seat 40D is an aisle seat with extra legroom. The seat in front has an electrical box beneath reducing legroom.....

Surely if there is a larger space between these Y seats and the PE seats in front, the electrical box would also be a distance away.

Has anyone experienced 40D who can comment?

Thanks,

PN

There was a thread on this recently. There are a number of people who swear by 40DEFG and I would not worry about the PE seats in front having anything to do with your legroom

Personally I have sat in 40C and with the cut out in the bulkhead my feet cannot reach the bulkhead although I am only 5'9".

I cannot comment about the limited recline but it may well be something like 6 inches normal recline and 40DEFG may have may have 5 1/2 inches recline. Personally I could not care about recline but I feel the benefits of extra legroom outweigh the limited recline, if any all.

Thanks for the info.

I tried searching but 40D was too short a term. I'll have another look now that I know there's a thread out there somewhere.

I also am far more concerned about legroom than reclining

If 40 is the first row of economy on your seatmap, then there will not be a box in front. I posted a pic of it on the linked thread. 40D is great, book it up.

It is, and I have.

Thanks :)

Just to confirm, there is no box in front of 40D. There is a solid bulkhead immediately ahead of row 40, so no seatboxes/recline etc, but also no on-floor storage for takeoff.

Excellent seat, one of the best in the Y cabin.

I agree with others, that row 40 is great - reasonably private and comfortable. I've not noticed the reduced recline myself.
I will put a plug in for 40G as it is across from the crew rest which makes it better in terms of privacy and quietness. Also on deplaning that aisle runs much more quickly than the other aisle due to the hold up to allow business passengers down from the bubble.

Attached are some recent photos of row 40 on the 744 kanagaroo route. Don't be put off by the leg room, I'm very tall (198cm).

Recline also seemed fine and there's no concern about the people behind you (because there aren't any).

Thanks for posting those. Always great to see images to truly understand the space involved!
