General EV Discussion

Though my concern is that BMW is tending to follow Telstra down the rabbit hole with many of the latest cars removing fan controls etc and integrating that into the infotainment system. Nooooo!!!
I got an i4 last month and this is my only complaint thus far - you can adjust the temperature anytime but have to hit the AC menu to adjust the fan speed.

Oh and Apple Maps displays on the speedo screen when being used via Car Play but Google Maps and Waze do not. Weird

that Tesla is the only Ev manufacturer to build Supercharging.
They are in other parts of the world.

Electrify America was funded by VWs dieselgate penalty.
BYD has a network in China.
Ionity in Europe is a joint venture of the car manufacturers BMW Group, Ford Motor Company, Hyundai Motor Group, Mercedes Benz AG and Volkswagen Group with Audi and Porsche, along with BlackRocks Climate Infrastructure Platform

And 3rd party BMW-style control knobs now available for 2021-2023 Tesla 3/Ys, for those who want buttons.

Interestingly also provides the ability to preheat the battery at any time, which is useful if wanting to charge at 3rd party DC chargers, something you can't do in a Tesla by itself.

So I have a genuine question...

A neighbour who works as a consultant for various car manufacturers told me last week that the unseen cost of EVs is battery replacement.

He said that batteries need to be replaced after about 5 years and the current cost is in the vicinity of $35,000.

He said that EV salespeople, if they are asked about battery replacement at all, say that the cost will definitely come down and buyers shouldn't worry.... but there's no sign of the cost of batteries coming down yet.

Thoughts? Is he correct? Or is he just rusted on to petrol cars and wanting to discredit EVs?

(Please understand that I am sincerely weighing up EV options and this is a genuine question!)

Excellent. They could put some in over here.

How long do you keep your cars?

As a comparison. For ICE cars, The Landcruiser 200 series V8 short block replacement is $70k for example.

Load of sh...

Pretty much all the EV manufacturers are providing 8+ yr warranties on the battery.

To replace a Tesla 3/Y 55kWh battery is about A$17k, by a recent quote published on one of the local FB forums, and despite now over 100k+ Tesla's in Australia I can't only think of two 3/Ys that have had battery replacement (one failed in Day1, and another at 11000km) - a few more have needed warranty issues for charging ports of drive/motor units but not the battery.

Tesla did have some warranty issues with pre-2017 Model Ss that used an earlier 1850 battery cell and design.

One near 10yo Model S in Australia with 600k km that's on its original battery and still with 85% of original range.

Also a few Model 3s used for rideshare that are over 250k km and still on original batteries (and brakes) - only maintenance expense has been tyres and windscreen washing fluid.

About the only thing he is correct about is that battery costs are slowly falling.

Plenty of articles around on battery costs per kWh over time and predictions for the future.

Mine would be up for replacement at the end of the year if that were the case. It did a 1500km round trip over Christmas with the family no issues, I am sure I've picked up some range loss over the past 4+ years but not enough that I notice it at all, it's imperceptible to me.

I am fully expecting another 6+ years out of this car and am certain it will be with the same battery.

Currently in China and again the range and proliferation of electric cars of all sorts and denominations is just staggering - I had a ride in one of these 2 nights ago booked through DiDi - HiPhi

A Tesla driver who crashed into a freezing Norwegian fjord was rescued by two people in a passing floating sauna.

Footage of the incident showed emergency workers hauling the vehicle out of the water in Oslo shortly after the motorist and his passenger were saved by the sauna users, wearing only towels around their waists.

This may interest some - MSN
These stories are just hilarious given the modern American capitalist economy (Meta, Google, Amazon - not to mention US DOHS etc,) is absolutely based on stealing AND monetarising personal data. And it's well known that Tesla steals personal data and sometimes car videos.

Agree fully. For security reasons, we always insisted that any work conversations were out of hearing/listening distance from all brands of phone, and other devices, such as cars, which had a SIM card in them. And people said I was crazy.

FWIW - re insurance on an EV - the 'Ette' has just sold her 2020 LEXUS RC350F Sport with 27K on the clock - purchased March 2020 for 85K and sold it Monday for 602K - she picked up a new BYD SEAL on Tuesday for which she paid 63K - insurance on SEAL $200 cheaper p.a. than the LEXUS it's replacing.

Has Ette allowed you to get into the drivers seat of the new BYD Seal?
Are you impressed @Cruiser Elite ?
Oh it’s a sensational vehicle - open the door and seat slides back - park your cough in seat close door and seat slides forward to original position - amazing 👍

And the ride is superb - equal to any vehicle I have ever ridden in - it glides it doesn’t drive 👍

More to the point, has CE allowed the 'ette' into the driver's seat of his Mustang Mach-E... 😜
Yep she has driven it for a number of days whilst hers was in getting roadworthy etc and then she had it detailed and wouldn’t drive her vehicle again until it was sold. I was confined to company transit van.

She was very tentative but seriously it is insured and they are only hunks of steel plastic and rubber - I am far from a ‘CarLover’ - motor vehicles are nothing more than work horses to me.

Having posted all I have I still have very limited knowledge of the EV world - what I can say is how easy it is to charge and how cheap it is - OVO Energy have an EV plan which costs 8c/kwh 24:00-06:00 which is the window I use to charge - 2secs to plug in / unplug each time and you have a full tank 👍

It does ~500km on a full charge - biggest trip I have done in 7 weeks I have had it is 300kmh so still very early days and have had no need to plan a long journey but that will happen some time 👍
