QF SYD-HND B787 J Supper / Breakfast
Had the exact same food when I flew QF25 in mid-december. Still printed on printer paper.

As with all my past experiences with QF's Japanese catering, the starter bento box was great, but the main wasn't great. Very dry beef. I feel like Qantas is just unable to re-heat it well (and forget the Renkon chips). Only time it's been decent is when I had Salmon one time.

Also, it took literally 50 minutes (checking my photo timestamps) for them to bring out my main after finishing the bento box starter. Never had to wait more than a few minutes when flying JL on the same route. I was seated in the business mini cabin in row 10.

ADL to Sydney J
No PDB
2 wines loaded
Very average choice of 2 meals - beef salad or chicken - both inedible !
Dinner service - ridiculous.
CSM didn’t care and hid in galley
Haven’t flown since Covid but couldn’t believe how damn average it is

Menu was similar when I flew on QF59 earlier in the month (excluding the breakfast options of course), also opted for the Japanese set menu.
No qualms with the bento box, but perhaps I should avoid beef options moving forward since the Barrington Hinterland beef fillet was very close to leather toughness when I got mine lol - I wonder who QF are using for catering for this?
I can't fault the CSM and crew though - they were great all around.

Afternoon (~4pm) 'refreshment' BNE-SYD flight.

Choice of soup, cheese plate or beef pasty. Beef pasty was surprisingly quite tasty and served with chutney and pumpkin mash(?). Koko black chocolate also on tray.

A quick and turbulent flight with the crew getting interrupted a couple of times. CSM still managed to get all J meals out and offer a few top ups while chatting with all passengers.

BNE-PER 1st Jan 2024 Departure

booted out of lounge at 8pm as flight was 'boarding' get to gate and there was a half hour delay to boarding.

PDB was a still or sparkling water
Choice of Pork & Pineapple Curry, Brisket and Mac and Cheese and a Chicken Salad
Was a side salad with smoked salmon and a woolies pack of lettuce in there with dressing
and a small 40g koko black chocolate

Crew were super friendly and efficient as not many were awake on the service.

Sydney to Adelaide
Brilliant service with PDB then a good choice of main
I had a cube beef with gravy, peas and roast potatoes which was good.
Mini cheesecake was also good
2 wines loaded with a reasonable red (sorry missed the winery)
Constant top ups and plastic cup for landing.
Great CSM who serviced J cabin

Amazing difference with this experience compared to the Adelaide to Sydney leg where the CSM was MIA and seemed to hate being there..
No PDB, average rushed inedible meal, had to be asked every time for a top up and tried hard not to interact or do anything to make it a pleasant experience.

QF76 YVR- SYD 27 Sep.

I'd had a large meal in the lounge so only had a cheese plate and fruit. Although, the menu didn't hold much appeal for me.

Drink refills totalled 2. The crew seemed to disappear not long after the dinner service.

Breakfast had new choices, and I elected for the pancakes, cold pressed juice, toast and coffee.

The pancakes were not too bad, light but not fluffy with a sensible amount of maple syrup. The bacon was regular North America fatty and the eggs seemed 'real'. The tomatoes were quite tasty.

One difference I noted between AA and QF is the utensils; QF leave them in the chiller whilst AA do not. I prefer room temp forks, not 4°.

This and the 787 I went to Dallas on did have expresso coffee machines. The Dallas crew knew how to use it, the YVR crew did not.
This menu has been the same on QF76 YVR to SYD since December 2021.

Flown the route three times now and the same menu in Dec 21, Dec 22 and Jul 23

SYD-MEL evening flight 4/1/24. Choice of chicken teriyaki or a beef salad. The chicken was pretty good but reminiscent of Y catering a decade or two ago. Good to see decent sourdough and the posh butter back on the tray. Quick, efficient, text book service from the CSM with proactive offers of refills throughout the flight.

Just a update to my comment last month about the chicken skewers - that I didn't think they were or had been on US routes. Well, sure enough, was on MEL-DFW lol. Quite tasty!

On return, I was concerned about portion size of schnitzel sandwich as a main plate, but I need not have been.. damn thing was bigger than Texas! LOL. Tasty though and no complaints. Brekky had a new (to me) option of fried eggs(!) with spinach on brioche. Was very popular in J and actually half decent (and also huge!). Anything to avoid the rubbish scrambled eggs/kale combo. CSM noted she made effort to ensure I got my choice due to it being so popular which was a nice touch.

Food and service of reasonable quality on both long haul legs.

2 Jan QF764 PER-MEL

Toasted panini on the red-eye - serviceable

20240101_234614.jpg

My son went for the tomato & basil (?) soup - he commented the flavours worked well

2 Jan QF426 MEL-SYD

Date scones with jam and clotted cream breakfast. Very nice.

7th Jan QF437 SYD-MEL

On the way back home, same breakfast (and just as nice), but slightly different delivery - the scones were from a different baker, and the clotted cream was an individual tub. Would rate this higher than the North bound flight, but YMMV...

7 Jan MEL Dom J lounge

20240107_131017.jpg

The chow mein; this didn't work for me. The crisp noodles felt like packet ramen, and the chilli sauce was overpowering. Again, other may rate it higher...

7 Jan QF 775 MEL-PER

Terriaki chicken. This was the only flight of the four where there was a PDB on offer - bottles of water placed at our seats.

20240107_161541.jpg

My son chose the waygu beef fillet.

20240107_161649 R.jpg

He was battling crook guts so didn't touch his meal. I cut the fillet and had a try of it - as others have commented, this dish is a hard one for QF to get right; it was dry and overcooked by the time it was served - the flavour was fine, but I was glad I'd chosen the chicken.

These flights were a status run using points for me. We got "enhanced" with a metal downgrade from A330's to 737s on both transcon legs at T-12 from flight #1. If I was paying cash, the $1700 premium (each way) to be in business on these cross country flights would be laughable.

PXL_20240108_135004948.jpg
Kare kare pork with Chinese eggplants, long beans, bok choy, jasmine rice and cashew nuts

Was sitting almost at the front of the cabin. Seatbelt signs were off at 12:26 UTC ("T"), drink cart T+40m, entree T+48m, main T+1h34m. Main plate cleared just after T+2h. A very slow service considering many in the cabin chose to skip the meal and sleep.

The menu mentioned a breakfast card but there wasn't one waiting at the seat. Asked and was told there would be a cart service instead. Options were Avocado, capscium and feta cheese on toast (below), granola, yoghurt, or a fruit plate.

The feta cheese had a very very sour taste and was inedible for me.

No animal-based dining option for breakfast?

QF932 PER-BNE 738 (what else) Jan 12 sched 0600 actual pushback 0610 (baggage delays), takeoff 0618 (21)

First flight of the year, this trip mostly for leisure for a change!

Unfortunately the lack of PDB and printed menus continues into 2024. Good flight if a little bumpy to begin with (persistent high cloud at FL360 for the first hour), friendly and attentive service by CSM Gary.

Had the corn, mushroom and spinach frittata with sausages and tomato, good but not great. The other breakfast options were a ham and cheese croissant and a bircher muesli. The more than passable Lois Lane sparkling washed things down.

HBA-SYD 12:05 QF Link service. Two options - Asian pork and noodles in bean sauce; Wagyu steak with vegetables.

IMG_4871.jpg

A substantial and tasty meal. Lots of quality and tender pork. Looked like others had some difficulty cutting the steak, so think I made the right choice. '21 Vasse Felix Cab Sav was good.

Great service again from the ground crew and then Brittany onboard. No PDB or pre-meal service, but otherwise very visible and attentive service.

SYD-CBR 16:00 QF Link service. Single option of Wagyu beef pie.

IMG_4873.jpg

Acceptable for this time/length of flight. The pie was actually really good - lots of sauce but also plenty of big tender pieces of beef.

Lightly loaded J cabin so service wasn't too rushed and pretty attentive. Bottles of water offered before take-off.

The pic above of the Super Sparkling (Lane Lois) wine reminded me of my own flight the other day. I am not sure when it happened, but they have indeed changed to minis (much like the Grant Burnt they used to use). Last year when it was introduced, iirc, they had full size bottles they served from but, like the pic above, I was served a mini the other day which surprised me a bit. The FA also said they had "two more with your name on them" lol. I only had one more (it was great service on that flight actually).

So not sure when the changed happened, but interesting nonetheless.
