Qantas Delays/Cancellations

The Friday 16 November B744 at 1135 hours from SYD to JNB, QF63, is expected to depart two hours late, arriving at 1840, 125 late. This will mean a late QF64 returning overnight to SYD.

QF73 (scheduled out of SYD at 1755 late this arvo for SFO) is worse, with departure expected at 2145. Arrival should become 1620 instead of 1225, so 235 minutes behind the eight ball.

QF73 i departing from the same gate as the slightly tardy QF64 is arriving at (gate 8) with the latter due in at 1606, 31 late. That B744 is VH-OEF.

Not a good day for the slowly diminishing QF Jumbo fleet.

Thursday 15's QF12 from JFK across the USA to LAX is predicted to depart at 2050 rather than 1800, meaning arrival in LAX at about 2350 instead of 2055. In turn the LAX - BNE B789, QF16 is predicted to depart 80 late at 0040 on Friday 16 'small hours'.

Strangely QF12 from LAX to SYD is showing as just an hour late ex LAX but this may be because the software has not taken account of the lengthy delay for the connecting '12' ex JFK.

UPDATE: QF has altered the forecast departure of the LAX - SYD QF12 to 0100 on Friday 16 for an estimated Saturday 15 1110 hours arrival, which would be 155 minutes late.

The LAX - BNE QF16 has also been changed with it suggested as departing two hours late at 0120 for BNE arrival on Saturday at 0905 hours, 110 late. In theory this should be sufficient time to turn around as QF15 and depart punctually at 1120 but this will depend on what time the aircraft is airborne from LAX.

QF94 ex LAX is showing as on time so we may be back to the bad old days (pre B789s) when passengers travelling from New York City to Melbourne were dumped onto QF12 in Los Angeles and then had the rigours of changing to a domestic flight in Sydney. 'The banker' QF96 only operates ex LAX on Tuesdays and Fridays under the current schedule.

Also on Friday 16 November, A333 VH-QPE departed SYD as QF41 at 1634 AEDT, 164 late, before diverting to ASP as the aircraft crossed the SA/NT border. Almost 90 min on the tarmac before resuming the flight to CGK.

Although earlier it had been showing as punctual, Thursday 15 November's QF94 from LAX to MEL ended up being late with A388 VH-OQF looking like a 1038 hours arrival, 48 minutes late on Saturday 17.

One I missed yesterday (16 November) was how QF41, the 1350 hours SYD to CGK - that often runs early - unusually had A333 VH-QPE (mostly it is an A332) and after taking off at late at 1617, diverted to ASP where arrival was at 1819. It then pushed back in central Australia at 1928, arriving CGK at 2153, 268 minutes late. The diversion was due to a medical emergency.

QF42 then commenced its journey at 2338, 278 minutes tardy with SYD Saturday 17 arrival suggested as 1044 hours, 269 late.

It looks to be forming QF143, the 1030 hours SYD to AKL that the QF website optimistically predicts as departing an hour late at 1130. This should end up being more like 1200 'high noon.'

As an aside, on 14 November, VH-QPE diverted to HKG on QF107 from SYD to PEK, resulting in a three hour delay (reduced to two and a half by SYD) for the overnight QF108. Bad luck comes in threes, so wonder what's next?

QF2260, the 1220 hours SYD to LDH is expected to depart at 1400 this afternoon. I've not been there but by many accounts this airport is a difficult one to operate into.

UIPDATE: QF has altered its prediction for QF143 departure to 1200 'high noon.' Does it read this blog?

Friday 16 November's QF73, the 1755 hours SYD - SFO did not depart until 2209 so as at 1125 Saturday 17 AEDT has only just arrived in SFO, at 1623. However this still gives the aircraft plenty of time to form the 2035 hours QF74 back to SYD.

Saturday 17 has the delayed QF12 (A388 VH-OQI) arriving at about 1207 hours, 212 minutes late as on Friday it did not take off from LAX until 0209 hours.

B789 VH-ZNA on QF16 from LAX is worse, as it took off at 0329 hours on Friday so on Saturday should arrive in BNE at 1125, 250 minutes late. 'The 15' is another one that the QF software has miscalculated, as it is displaying a 70 minute delayed departure at 1230. 1305 or later is my back of the envelope guess.

Best of luck today, should be quite a few delayed flights out of Perth this morning. Qantas terminal 3/4 at perth evacuated about 30mins ago. All heading in now. Sydney and Melbourne allowed in first.

As QF107 was late on Friday 16 November, QF108 returning from PEK to SYD should arrive on Saturday 17 at 1453 hours, 38 minutes behind the schedule.

The B744 on QF64 (JNB - SYD) departed on Friday night at 2035 hours, 105 minutes tardy so Saturday 17 afternoon arrival is forecast as 1726 hours, 111 minutes late. This should be sufficient time to form a punctual QF3, the 1925 hours SYD - HNL.

The delayed SYD - AKL QF143 departed at 1202 hours on Saturday 17, 92 late with arrival changed to an estimated 1701 hours, 81 late.

Was it due to someone taking a forbidden item through - 'security scare' - or some other reason?

I took this pic when going back through security. Liquid all over the floor at one of the security checkpoints ?

Thanks L1925. May not explain 'why' but interesting. If you find out more please let us know.

It isn't a busy time of the week, but on Saturday 17 November as a result, QF642, the 0920 hours PER - SYD looks to be delayed to an estimated 1000 departure and QF772 (0925 hours PER - MEL) similarly affected with a revised 1010 hours departure.

QF35, the 1220 hours MEL - SIN on Saturday 17 November departed at 1313, taking off to the south at 1327. A380 Vh-OQF should arrive at 1755 hours, 50 minutes behind schedule.

The 1400 hours AKL - SYD, QF154, departed 54 late with arrival likely at 1611, 36 minutes past the schedule.

A332 VH-EBK on QF51 (1150 hours BNE up to SIN) took off at 1228 on Saturday 17. Anticipated arrival is 1827, 32 late.

In more on Saturday 17 November, QF127 (1550 hours SYD up to HKG, A332 VH-EBS) was originally supposedly delayed just 20 minutes in its departure. However pushback occurred at 1634 and takeoff at 1650, so arrival should be 2255 tonight, 40 late.

'The 15' (delayed by being late inbound on QF16) departed BNE 119 late at 1319 this afternoon for an expected LAX same day arrival at 0730, 90 late. This is highly likely to mean a delayed departure for the crosscountry QF11 to JFK, and probably the returning Saturday night QF12 back to LAX and then QF16 to BNE.

Saturday 17 November's QF1553 (early evening 1805 hours BNE down to CBR) was airborne at 1912 with B717 VH-NXI. Arrival should be at 2141 hours, 46 late.

QF94 LAX-MEL expected to arrive 94 min tardy at 11 24am. (VH-OQH). Likely to affect the MEL-SIN service, but hopefully not by too much.

QF96 also running behind, expected at 11 25am, 55 late.

And (thank you Silvia) on top of QF94/QF96 running late, QF12 from LAX to SYD should arrive on Sunday 18 November at about 1009 hours, as luck would have it also 94 minutes late. The more generous turnaround times in Sydney hopefully mean no delayed A388s tomorrow.

Sunday 18 November sees QF63, the 1135 hours late morning long B744 flight from SYD to JNB expected to depart 45 minutes tardy.

QF107 (1335 hours afternoon SYD up to PEK) has a similar expected 40 minute delay in its pushing back.

QF94 arrived 91 minutes behind schedule at 1121, so QF35 is expected to depart for SIN 40 late at 1300 this afternoon. That is minimum turnaround for an A380. While cleaners are efficient, I always wonder how well aircraft cabins are cleaned under such time pressure.

QF63 on Sunday 18 departed at 1234 hours, 59 late from SYD but should pick up a little time on a blocks off to blocks on basis with arrival at gate suggested as 1712, 37 minutes behind the timetable.B744 VH-OEI is the aircraft.

QF743 (Sunday 18 November 2018, the scheduled evening 1840 hours SYD - ADL that was in the sky at 1949 (B738 VH-VZD) looks to be arriving at 2113 hours, 58 late.

Further north, QF1578 (1740 SYD - MCY that was not airborne until 1904 hours with B717 VH-NXE) should be at its destination ramp at 1919, 59 late.

The TSV - BNE QF1793 that has VH-YQS, another B717 has an at gate arrival time of 1924, 44 late.

To add on Melburnian’s previous post, QF459 SYD-MEL left at 7 44, 104 late, arriving to MEL at 8 51pm, 81 tardy (VH-VYJ)

Also QF133 (MEL-CHC) left 69 tardy at 7 56pm expected at Christchurch around 12 50am (VH-XZD)

It is fairly unusual for the initial MEL to PER sector of the daily QF9 to be delayed, but, adding to Silvia's contribution tonight, B789 VH-ZND too over at 1929 with PER arrival suggested at 1909, 59 late. This will delay pushback of the much longer later flight to LHR by a similar number of minutes. From observation a really fast intermediate stop can pick up five minutes or so.
