Ihad an interesting day yesterday running around Adelaide trying to find somewhere to get 50 Euro as a gift for a friend who is travelling soon. Given the various discussions in the past about where to change currency to get the best deal and the related uncertainties to do with changing rates and fees, I thought I share the results of the 2 hours a spent getting quotes, as it is a snapshot over a limited timeperiod of a few curency providers.

Without further ado

NAB E50 $A88.08 @ 0.6404 Fee $10
CBA E50 @ 0.6322 Fee $8 - line was too long so i did get a printed quote, but confirmed the rate and fee
Bank SA E50 @ 0.6404 Fee about $8 or $10 - lost the printed quote
Westpac/AMEX E50 $A86.08 @ 0.6404 Fee $8

Travelex E50 $A87.08 @0.6404 Fee $9

And the winner was

UAExchange (King William St) E50 $A77.65 @0.6440 Fee $0 - no fee, best rate!

So the fee is a killer for low amounts. The fee also changes to 1% for NAB and CBA, if that is higher that the fixed fee listed above. A real turn around from 3 years ago when NAB had no fee and the best rate.

Good to know, although I don’t think I’ll be buying my euros in Adelaide :p

I wonder why UAExchange has such a better rate though. I know the rate fluctuates, were they the last place you checked (or the first) so the rate was different at the time and changed)?

I wnet to UAExchange second last. Checked the Westpac/AMEX price and then went back to UAE, which didn't change in that time. UAE won basically because they had no fees at all, so that was basic a flat exchange rate. It was also only 0.36 cents better, so not a great advantage.

The usual price changes during the day are part of the reason that I put this together as I did it in a fairly short time period.

Oh and I did this on Friday, just checked the time of my post Sunday morning not Saturday night.
