Gday folks....does anyone know of a competitive place in Sydney to buy euros?

Thanks in advance

ac.

I read a tip once to just use an Amex card as they have closest to market rate plus 2-3% fee. Also withdraw from ATM by cash advance or your own deposited funds.

Otherwise go to the big banks in the city.

Australia Post seem to have good rates with no commission. I recently got some Euro for an Italy trip. Ordered it one day, picked it up the next.

KVB Kunlun in the city.
Or UAExchange if there is one in Sydney.

The spread at most other places is massive.

Amex is one of the worst options when away as they do a double conversion to USD and then to AUD.

I recently got a great deal from Travelex at the airport. They negotiate if you are changing more than pocket money. I changed $2000 and got pretty close to interbank with 0% commission.

Also, I read that Ozforex are going to launch a currency card. They offer the best deals I have found transferring between countries - it might be worth checking if their product is in the market yet.

Plain old CBA for me.....good rate & IIRC no com.

CBA have a 1%/$8 fee. That wipes them out of my book.

My first quote was CBA. Travelex blew them out of the water.

I should have mentioned that the offer rate at the airport Travelex is significantly worse than the high street - by 5c on the dollar in my case.

In the conversion calculations, I've included the all important convenience factor - walk in walk out, go to lunch:mrgreen:

I would have thought ordering online and picking up at the airport is pretty convenient!

I found that ordering online with Travelex and picking up at the airport was the best value last time I did it. Another option is to just withdraw euros from an ATM at the airport when you get to Europe. I found this good value in Brussels last September.

A few quick quotes, cash rates

CBA: 0.7688 + fees/commission
Travelex online: 0.7676 no commission
St George (NSW): 0.7726 + fees/commission

UOB in Changi Airport (both air/land side): Bank buys AUD (sells SGD) @ 1.3227, sells EUR (buys SGD) @ 1.6710. No commission. Total rate = 0.7915.

That is, if you are going to Europe, go via SIN, and get your EUR at the airport airside while you are in transit. In fact, it's a very quick transaction with no paperwork. Simply hand over the money in one currency, and they'll hand you back the money in the other currency, with a receipt.

Not sure about euro. BUT I bank suncorp and ( and I get a staff rate due to an association via dealer group ) we ought Yen for a Japan trip and the rate was really amazing. We cold not get close anywhere in Japan. And a note to you all, in Japan carry (take) as much cash as possible. It is practically impossible to get cash via an ATM , cash is used in almost every small business (restaurant ) and ATM's don't like anything except Japanese cards. We did finally get some AUD changed at a bank and it was a shocking rate of exchange.
My point above about staff rate if you don't work in a bank ( and by your post I reckon you do not) then you may know someone who does, if changing loads of cash this is a worthwhile exercise. But for the rest I now use a 28 degrees credit card when spending overseas.

Credit unions offer good rates to members as well .

Of course, the interbank rate displayed by Bloomberg last night was 0.81xy. In the past UAE Exchange in Adelaide has been within 1.5 cents of the interbank rate. Potentially as good as Changi. I'm sorry to say I can't go and check their rate today as we have a kids birthday sleep over tonight and I have duties.

You're right! Hadn't factored in the USD as base currency. Thanks.
