Hilton Lake Taupo – July 10 Visit three days

We recently had the pleasure of visiting the very beautiful Lake Taupo region in the North Island and the opportunity to stay at the recently launched Hilton (ex DeBretts).

Check-in was done efficiently. We were upgraded to a one bedroom apartment from a King, thanks to a senior AFF member contacting the hotel. The room itself overlooked the Lake and the mountain vistas, a very stunning backdrop. While the room did also face the highway and previous reports have indicated road noise issues, this was not clearly evident and only in rare cases where trucks were (illegally) using engine braking. While it is a five star property, it is very simple and the structure supports the amount of rooms. For example the driveway is largely unattended and relies of people doing the right thing.

For parking there are a number of options, however it is easier to park yourself close by. We had Ice on the car on a few mornings but this was quickly sorted by scraping it off with the room card.

The restaurant is extremely well run (Lago) and offers fantastic value for money. It is known as one of the better restaurants in NZ with a chef that also manages a renowned Auckland property. We had breakfast there daily and dinner twice. The Bar area is very tasteful and intimate. Prices are very reasonable especially when you take into account the FX.

The property has a chequered history with a number of owners and a delayed construction of the current property. You can see what has been cut down. The pool area is quite small, as is the Spa and Gym, however functional. They could be showcased more effectively with night lighting and have a bar service. You do get the impression this was an area cut back to fit a budget. There is a great mineral spring’s area next door which offers great value for authentic hot mineral springs and if you let them know you are a Hilton guest, will get a reduced rate (not that I saw that advertised in the hotel??).

The rooms are large and tastefully furnished in that latest ‘inoffensive’ brownish colour fashion. The floors are heated in the bathroom. The AC was a bit noisy at times and there were no heavy light shielding curtains in the lounge room (sofa bed) so sun up will be light through the room. The down lights could also have dimmers attached, there was only one other lamp. Overall they are pleasant, large rooms that do their job well.

The big selling point is the staff, who are professional unhurried and competent. I tried to tip the porter and he refused!!! All sightseeing bookings and advice was obtained from the front desk in a friendly and efficient manner.

Overall a very good package and we will definitely be back. Management is very proactive in providing top shelf accommodation options in the area and that will see the property continue to be a success.

I hope others can enjoy this wonderful property and part of the world.

In terms of tourist attractions around the place there are plenty. We did go on a Jet boat ride, on the Huka River. I would highly recommend the Jet Rapids boat, as it is the only one that travails the rapids of the Huka River, which can be fantastic especially when they open the dam upstream at 10am/12pm/2pm. They also went longer than the advertised time and we got a great CD of all the pictures taken at the end of the tour (NZ$35).

8.5/10.

Regards

SPRUCE

I agree with your sentiments on room size, we had just a normal king room (most likely the same as what you had originally booked) and there was *a lot* of space in it!

We ended up paying extra to park underneath, just made life that little bit easier.

The one problem I did have is the road it was on was signposted as something different to what the hotel said it was, so confused us a little when driving around trying to find it!

Thanks Spruce.

I hope they treat us as well as they did you when we have our five nights there next week and I'm confident that they will do so.

Our stay had pretty ordinary service, but then again.. neither of us had anything more than Silver HH status

We had a night here last week.I needed a night at a Hilton as our next planned stay at a Hilton property is late november 2012 and I didn't want to loose my HH points.A rate of $NZ195 for a basic king room.We were upgraded to a 1 bedroom Junior suite-however all these rooms face the back so no lake view.We found the furnishings etc too stark, nothing to get excited about. The bedroom was small. The worst part was the bathroom-very small, tiny shower cubicle with poor shower head,no bench space for toiletries. As Mrsdrron says-designed by a man.
In room internet is now available and free for Gold,Diamonds. Also for them the continental buffet breakfast is free-you have to order any cooked selection.
The other problem is that the Hilton is far from anything and you do need a car.Parking is $35 for valet,$15 for self parking under cover and free for self parking outside. We only ate in for brekkie.
Although you dont hear road noise facing the back the units themselves are not soundproofed.Someone near us had a bad case of food poisoning or prostatism or both so toilet flushing interrupted our sleep constantly. So some pictures-

Personally if in the area again I would stay in an apartment on the lake, probably the ones with that wonderful name-COVE.

Looks very basic. Especially that couch/tv shot.

I think the standard room I had when there was almost just as good as that, and to boot I did actually have a lake view  It was a huge room, too.

A full report to follow. However first impressions of front of house staff were poor 4/10. Room was brilliant, but agree with comments about light coming through the curtains. Internet is$30.00 per day per device, not pretty when you have two iPhones, 2 iPads and a note book , Hilton need a rethink on this one. Otherwise a very pleasant venue, catching two nice 2 1/2 lb trout made the trip worth while.

Hmmm, interesting comment re the possible food poisoning.

I know the team who photographed the hotel right before it opened, and they had the experience of eating at the pre-opening dinner. Seems the lamb was a little dodgy - 2 of the three had it and were sick the 3rd team member stuck with fish and all was well. . . . . .

They commented the rooms were ok - were given standard rooms for the shoot - but were nothing to get excited about. Admittedly, you do get a bit ho-hum about hotel rooms, and by the end of the year, you just want a bed to sleep in that's comfortable, but they were comparing them to the (at the time) recently completed Hilton in Pattaya - and those were extremely nice rooms!!!
