Stayed at the 4P Geelong on the AA rate this week and it was an underwhelming experience, probably due to the lack of competition in town.

Location
Great, but the hotel even manages to stuff this up with no self parking, valet for $25 being the only option, and no direct access to the street behind where Westfield is as its been locked on level 3, meaning quite a few stairs to navigate in both directions.

Rooms,
Quite nice with most having partial sea views, modern with the classic shower in the bath.

Restaurant
Overpriced plain food with the average main for dinner at $35, kids meals $10 (no specific kids menu). SPG have been running a promo for three months that included a free glass of wine with main, 10% discount and a discount card for 20% on your next visit, this was well promoted in the hotel with banners and a tent card on every table, yet the wait staff did not know anything about despite it having run for ten weeks!
Had to get the wine credited on checkout.

SPG Recognition - Poor, no mention on checkin or offer of welcome amenity.

Internet: Worked well for a minute then died, glad I had BYO to fall back on.

Tips: For breakfast walk out the hotel, turn left and then turn left again at the first street, walk two blocks and you will come across a couple of Vietnamese bakeries that offer a very cheap yet tasty option if you don't mind rolls/croissants etc.

Would I go back, yes so long as the rate is similar as its reasonable, fix the niggles re service and the restaurant and I would be happy to pay a lot more!

Very familiar with this hotel, as I stay there a few times each year. Staying on Monday night at $144 a night, will add some comments after that stay.

Location is not bad Westfield is right behind (Myer,BigW,Target). Plenty of food options in Westfield itself.

Highly recommend taking the chopper flight which departs opposite on the pier. Great fun.

I took the points when I mentioned it at checkout (its 125 at 4Ps and Aloft).

Kind of reminds me of Courtyard by Marriott type hotel.. anyway its good that you got the bonus points in the end!
Thanks for the trip report, I may use this hotel in the future in case I get low on stays to retain my SPG status. ;)

I received an email today from the GM which I found to be very genuine and honest about the feedback I provided:

Due to the nature of feedback provided all of your ratings & comments have been sent directly to me - General Manager and the Hotels Executive Committee.

The Executive Committee has since met read and discussed with interest your comments and score regarding your experience.
Based on your feedback we commit to working hard with our teams to review and improve our product offerings and overcome our operational shortfall in the area you have highlighted Poor recognition of SPG membership, poor Internet, expensive and lacking variety in food offerings, poor service in restaurant including no knowledge of triple treat promo despite a plethora of advertising material in same restaurant for the promo.

Mark rest assured your score along with your comments are not wasted as our overall commitment is to consistently achieve high service levels in all areas.
Following our investigation we agree our poor recognition of your Gold SPG status is unacceptable although please know this is very much out of the ordinary for us.
I have meet with SPG champion and we have decided to re-train our front office associates and our food and beverage associates in the importance of acknowledging all of our SPG membership status as well as ensuring all associates are fully aware and trained in our monthly SPG promotions highlighting the utmost focus must be on communication and recognition.
Please accept my / our sincere apologies for this shortcoming.

We have also reviewed our internet connection and have just spent $3k and completed a refit of our wireless access points and negotiated an increase in our band width.
I have also met with my Exec Chef and discussed your feedback and we have since your stay revamped our food offerings and presentation

I would suggest this bodes well for the Hotels future, time will tell whether or not the feedback has made a difference, having the majority of my family in Geelong and once again about to be a SPG Plat, I suspect I will soon find out if in fact the hotel has stepped up to the plate.

The feedback seems sincere enough, sure hope it is adequately executed.
