Today SilkAir (MI), the regional airline of Singapore Airlines, becomes the latest airline partner to join Velocity Frequent Flyer.

Velocity members will be able to earn Points and Status Credits or redeem their Points on the SilkAir network across South East Asia, India and China. This includes the ability to redeem Points for Reward Seats or Any Seat up to 331 days in advance on any SilkAir flight (with the MI flight number).

For clarity, the partnership allows earn on:

Eligible Flights:

  • Flights marketed by SilkAir (MI) and operated by SilkAir
  • Flights marketed by Virgin Australia (VA) and operated by SilkAir
  • Flights marketed by Singapore Airlines (SQ) and operated by SilkAir
  • Flights marketed by SilkAir (MI) and operated by Singapore Airlines

Ineligible Flights:

  • Charter flights operated by SilkAir
  • Flights marketed SilkAir (MI) and operated by another airline (not listed above) under a codeshare agreement
  • Flights marketed by another airline and operated by SilkAir (MI) (not listed above) under a codeshare agreement

For Velocity Gold and Platinum members, you will also be able to use your benefits across the SilkAir network including priority check-in, priority boarding and complimentary lounge access for the member and a guest on day of travel.

SilkAir flies to over 44 destinations across 12 countries, including Darwin to Singapore, connecting the Northern Territory with Singapore Airlines’ global hub.

A Ha, great news, and fixes a large hole in respect the DRW flights. Will have to look at my options for some ex SIN journeys in the next few weeks!

Whilst this is welcome news, especially for ex-DRW flights as pointed out by markis10, it accelerates the need to address the shortcomings with the SQ partnership. The lack of seat-selection, the pitiful Gold Lounge, and the zero points on discount Y make flying SQ as a VA elite pretty iffy. I can only assume the same applies to MI flights?

Seat selection would be nice, but as for other two, keep dreaming!

Whilst SQ decides to maintain a KrisFlyer Gold lounge and SilverKris lounge separate at SIN, unless SQ breaks character and / or exits *A there will be no change on that front. Star Alliance elites have been b****ing about this for years.

As for the zero earn on the cheapest Y fares, I guess SQ could try relenting a bit, especially as their own KF elites can earn something on such fares (albeit only 10% of mileage in the worst case). Again, this relenting would likely have to be in line with other partners in Star Alliance.

The ineligible fare classes for earn (and SCs) on MI are N, Q, T and V. Not sure how cheap that extends to in the MI fare spectrum.

The only benefits above Star Gold and the only other program MI flights can be credited to.

So only access to the Singapore lounge.... pitiful given SilkAir has lounge agreements at many of their destinations.

Must be not updated properly on the Virgin website. Otherwise, this may be one for VFF to confirm.

Also to make it clear whether flying MI grants access to only the lounge at Singapore, only Singapore operated lounges or other.....

Yay! Good to see. It certainly makes flying ex DRW more attractive when connecting to an SQ or MI flight that isn't on the VA network.

Okay. Be careful and warned. Platinum member here Velocity. In Kathmandu Silk Air flight to Singapore. Ground crew didnt have a clue (can understand that, so had a print of the changes). Didnt make a difference. Lots of discussion.

To make things worse on my first boarding pass the Velocity number was printed and linked to this leg. BP i received at airport my Krisflyer number was printed. Of course I wanted this changed. They tried but couldnt.

PM -ed Velocity on Facebook with pics of both BP. This was answer (which I honestly can't believe):

Unfortunately you won't be able to travel on your Velocity Membership Number on this flight as it was booked before 10 October. Sorry for the disappointment. For any future bookings on Silk Air services, please include your number to ensure you receive any Points and Status Credits you are entitled to and your Platinum Status is recognised.

I think the information on the website should say for all bookings made after 10/10/2013... etc.

Not happy.
Used my Priority Pass to enter the lounge.
So far for my initial excitement.

This answer is btw in contrast to an answer they recently provided on their FB page:

Hi xx_xx, thanks for your question. No unfortunately not. Members will only earn Points and Status Credits on flights taken from today.

So: i guess it should be possible to get the points and SC credited for my flight today.

Unfortunately inconsistent information which will mean I will end up chasing the SC and points.

Update: Velocity rep replied. Admitted providing me with wrong info. Earning possible from 10/10/2013 onwards.

I will let you know how I go with the SC and miles for the flight.

I applaud them for responding so quickly.

Hi, and sorry for bumping an old thread.

Seeking opinions or experience of the following when traveling with SilkAir.

I am a Gold DJ member and flying SIN to HKT (coughet) return on a SilkAir operated flight. From my reading of the Lounge Access rules, I won't get lounge access in Singapore or coughet as it is not a SQ operated flight. Is this correct?

Our MI flights 771 & 772 to Koh Samui for new years did not have a SQ code applied for a booking made last March using SQ points. No SQ code used on the tickets, boarding pass and also the airport boards from memory. Would be surprised if unable to get into the SQ lounge in SIN (not aware of any specific MI lounge) or at regional lounges which MI in USM was sharing with Thai planes.
Apart from the 319 being what it is (doubt much larger could land at USM), couldn't fault the experience. Vastly superior experience (eg. hot towels before and after meal, they keep topping up drinks until you stop) to a recent J experience in QFd SYD-ADL and went close to matching the J QFi meals had to and from SIN.

The Frequent Flyer Concierge team takes the hard work out of finding reward seat availability. Using their expert knowledge and specialised tools, they'll help you book a great trip that maximises the value for your points.

Thanks Dave. To clarify, you were in Y?

Sounds like a cut and paste typo, as it doesn't make a lot of sense. Maybe worth sending the Velocity rep a PM, as the clause is at odds with what is indicated in the first post of this thread made by Velocity Frequent Flyer, which suggests access is granted for Silk Air marketed flights operated by either SQ or MI.

Thanks for the suggestion. Have sent a PM and will report the response (if any).

For future reference, the DJ rep responded to my PM with the following:

****
With Velocity Gold status you are entitled to the KrisFlyer Gold lounge in Singapore, but no entitlement to lounge access in coughet.
