Evening,

I'm planning first trip to SIN and KUL and was wondering if anyone has any recommendations for SPG hotels there, any tips for increasing my chances to getting a suite upgrade (SPG platinum)?

Looking at prices will probably go for the Sheraton Towers in SIN and Imperial or Westin in KUL.

Much appreciated!!

I usually type "flyertalk" and {hotel name} into google and you will find a wealth of experiences (platinum or otherwise) in the "master thread" on flyertalk for each hotel, and may get a good feel of which hotel best suits your needs. The experience with SPG on AFF seems to be fairly limited (with a couple of exceptions), probably due to limited SPG exposure in Australia (Hilton has more interest, due to the status match with Virgin).

The Sheraton in Singapore is average, checkout Starwood Preferred Guest - Hotel Offers and Loyalty Program spg.com for specials every week as sometimes the W pops up, in KUL the Sheraton is good while the Le Meridien has small rooms but I think a better location. Both the hotels in KL mentioned offer a discounted upgrade to a suite or club after booking a standard room on the confirmation email.

I stayed at Sheraton Towers in Singapore in March. As platinum I was upgraded to a club room (Tower room), not a suite so there are no guaranties when it comes to platinum upgrades.
The hotel is a bit old but rooms are nice and the service is great. Also nearly half price compared to hotels in CBD.

Went back and checked my booking emails:

Classic Room LM booked - offer: Buffet Breakfast, Internet Access + Le Meridien Club Privileges fior as little as MYR100++ per night

Allow yourself to discover a space that encourages you to dream. Upgrade to Le Meridien Club Room for as little as MYR100++ per night per person or Le Meridien Club Suite for only MYR200++ per night for 1 person (2nd person at RM100++ per night).

At the Sheraton Imperial, Club to Suite:
http://www.sheratonimperialkualalumpur.com/forms/club-to-suite

Upgrade to Deluxe Suite for additional of RM100 nett only per night

You'll look forward to our one-bedroom Deluxe Suite where you can host private meetings or entertain a small group of colleagues in the suite. Treat yourself to the higher category today, upgrade to Deluxe Suite for an additional of RM100 nett only per night.

Club rooms often offer free laundry for a few pieces as well.

Sheraton Towers Singapore is Ok. Its a bit dated, actually alot dated ;) however the service is very good. I have only stayed there a handful of times and the best upgrade I ever got there was a room with a decent sized outdoor terrace.

Westin Kuala Lumpur would be my pick for KL purely because of its good location to shops, restaurants, bars. Most upgrades are usually to an executive floor (makes no difference really if one is a platinum). I have received upgrades to the 1 bedroom apartment in the tower residence or the larger suites. However the Sheraton Imperial is a solid hotel too - ableit the slight location issue, platinums get treated quite well there as well just like they do at the Westin, LM.

Thank you for all the info guys! Will look into offers and discounted upgrades etc. Will let you know how it goes...

A quick question in regards to the Platinum upgrades, I have just completed the Platinum challange and haven't stayed as Platinum yet. You usually get an upgrade to a higher room, but I imagine that you can usually upgrade to an even better room with points or extra pay when checking in, is that usually the case?

cheers again!

We have stayed at both the St.Regis and Sheraton in SIN.Rooms are larger at the St.Regis but we felt the place a little bit up themselves so as the Sheraton is usually about half the price we have gone back to staying there.I enjoy the lounge spreads. No upgrade to suites but on FT reports of this happening when using their suite night upgrades.
In KUL have only stayed at Le Meridien which suits us better with easy access to the trains.Plus get upgraded to a suite. Also you can charge back meals when dining in the Hilton's restaurants next door-but haven't been back last 2 years and this may have changed.

Can't comment on KUL, but the best SPG hotel in SIN (by miles from anything else) is the St Regis. While they can be fairly stingy on their upgrades, even the standard rooms are pretty amazing. My favourite hotel in SIN by a long way. If I didn't choose to split stays with the hyatt (to maintain my Hyatt status), I'd always stay there.

Depending on when you are planning to go, you might also get the option of the soon to be opened 'The Westin Singapore' (opening in mid-Nov). It's not in the best location for leisure travel, and probably geared more towards big business (in the financial district) rather than big fun or big nights out, but nothing is ever far away in Singapore. I'm in the Lion City numerous times a year (usually moving between Fairmont, Pan Pacific & Swissotel) and plan to give it a go after it opens.

Interwebs linky thing here: The Westin Singapore - Opening November 15, 2013

Cheers.

I was going to mention the Westin. There will be opening dramas/issues, but probably opening promos and decent service recovery too, if going in Nov/Dec.

Really depends on what you want to do and where you want to be- the St Regis is far from MRTs so it's taxis or walking. The Sheraton is older but decent service and club is ok according to my parents. Not as far to MRT and Orchard/Scotts Rd shops.
The W is nice, best pool in SIN I reckon, but hard to get away from and expensive to catch taxis to-from. They have a free shuttle to Vivo on the main island but this isn't much more convenient.

The Westin will be a 2-3 block walk to the MRT and you will be a bit away from the action, closer to the new CBD. Still an easy walk around the Marina Bay Area and from there past the old cricket club and you are at City Hall and more shops/attractions.

I'd try the Westin if possible, but I was at the W for close to opening too. New hotels are kind of nice...

Westin, whilst not close to the traditional shopping areas of Orchard and eating area of Clarke Quay, is also close to Tanjang Pagar area which has some interesting bars and restaurants too. Not far from Chinatown either.

Stayed in Sheraton Towers a few times this year, I like it because its close to MRT, close to Orchard, easy to get to airport, club is decent and pool is good and rarely used (or seems to b when I go there).

Will Westin for my visit in Dec. Have already booked the Towers for October visits (two visits over 10 days) using their current promotion which makes weekend stays a very good bargain.

Just spent three nights at the new Westin in Chennai, brilliant hotel, food was off the chain. Also, sports bar on level 2, great place to watch what's happening with global sports and have a few drinks before hitting some of the very good restaurants in Chennai.

Cheers

In KL you can't beat the westin. Good location and great price. Outstanding service

Good to know the only Starwood hotel I have missed is the best, mind you the St Regis is well on its way at Sentral, making a mattress run easy!

Ooh I have to disagree. I go Le meridien > Sheraton > Westin. Haven't tried the aloft yet. All 3 have the best breakfasts in the world that I've tried so far though! Le meridien has great variety, and they always give me a corner room, with choccies and fruit (as a gold). Sheraton gave me a suite once when I was travelling with Mr k_sheep, and has ice cream for breakfast! Whereas I find the westin cold and unwelcoming ... but with it's own bakery at breakfast.

With the monorail I don't really find any better or worse for location. Better street food around the sheraton, but better shopping around westin and you can't be le meridien for getting to/from the airport.

I don't use the Monorail when going to the Sheraton, there is a LRT station a short walk away that gives a trip to central in three stops and half the time/price. I agree with the LM being good, love the toiletries especially in the Deluxe rooms while I like the size of the Sheraton rooms and it feels like home since it was the first hotel I stayed at in KL in 1998 on my first trip.

I also like the Coffee Shop at the side when I need a real coffee, one day they will get that building across the road finished, pretty sure it was under construction in 98.

Yes for sure ... but monorail is easier if you want to get to Bukit Bintang or surrounds.

Agreed on the road outside Sentral! Arrrrgh!!

FWIW Aloft I find is a good arrival hotel, just as easy, in fact easier to get to than LM, its 3000 Starpoints and comfortable enough to crash in, even if it has soap in a dispenser etc. I then move on the next morning to another SPG property.

Friends don't let friends stay at the Sheraton Singapore.

I've stayed at the Ritz Carlton in KL which is across the lane from the Westin - so echo the thoughts that the location of the Westin is perfect.
