Could have been 26 who ate at an airport establishment or even at the same conference, without medical tests the cause is unknown.

Sounds like they are a group travelling together.

According to the article I believe so, I think the flight they were on is irrelevant, feel for all on the flight though as it must not have been fun and with the reduced toilet count, not much fun. Doubt they had enough Imodium to cater for that number, if they have any?

Qantas don't seem to think it is irrelevant according to their website they have asked all passengers to keep an eye for their health.A number of passengers travelling in the same group on QF28 (Santiago-Sydney) became unwell with a gastro intestinal illness. It is believed the illness was contracted before boarding the aircraft and symptoms became evident during the flight.
The aircraft has been met by medical staff to look after the unwell passengers.
As a precaution, other passengers have been advised to keep a close eye on their health over the next 24 to 48 hours and seek medical advice if they become unwell.A number of passengers travelling in the same group on QF28 (Santiago-Sydney) became unwell with a gastro intestinal illness. It is believed the illness was contracted before boarding the aircraft and symptoms became evident during the flight.

Thats a good point, I am no doctor but imagine it might be contagious!

Just saw a segment on Channel Ten's The Project which reported that the affected pax were a school group from MEL who had been in Rio for World Youth Day and that they were apparently not feeling well when they boarded the flight.

I don't know whether they weren't feeling well when they boarded their preceeding flight from Rio to Santiago where they would have checked in for their flights back to MEL.

Home - The Project

It's clearly Qantas's fault! They should have had a doctor at check-in making sure that all passengers were OK to check in. Just like Tiger is weighing handbags!

Am I taking the pizz?

Of-course I am!

Side effects from having their drinks spiked at WYD perhaps. ;)

Qantas confirmed that a number of passengers were struck down with an illness during flight QF 28 from Santiago that landed about 5:15 pm on Thursday. The airline says the passengers were travelling as a group, and that the illness was contracted before the plane took off.

I was on the island of Pag in 2006 when a gastro outbreak occurred. Me and my mate were hit hard. IIRC they said the outbreak was caused by a nightclub making icecubes from water from a well.

QF tweeted a link to a statement they "believe the pax contracted the sickness prior to boarding the flight".

The event and any response will likely managed by a professional local response. Those pax would be effectively triaged and their management co-ordinated enroute. I have full faith in any local response.

I speculate that this is something that lurked among pax preflight and manifested enroute.

Hence the reason why I don't have ice in any drinks while away in "out of the way" places, bottled water only, I even brush my teeth from a bottle of water

Yes I remember being in Bali in the early 1980s and ice cubes in drinks was the cause of many a "Bali Belly" discomfort.

It must have been a long uncomfortable flight for all passengers on board of that flight from Santiago. I'm not sure how the toilet situation coped.

Where's them miracles when you need one ey??

Generic Loperamide (aka regular Imodium without the high cost) should be carried by all travellers IMHO. While you should let nature 'run' it's course, on a plane situation you really don't want to be visiting the toilet every x minutes.

The very sad thing for these kids as I understand it, is that many did not make it to the toilet in time. The stuff of nightmares for the sick and the 'flow on' effect to others not actually sick before.

Terrible for all involved - the kids, the other passengers, the crew, the cleaners..........it is arguably the worst feeling on any flight.

But if they weren't feeling well before hand, it makes you wonder why they on the flight? I know they probably wanted to get home and didn't think it would be that bad but 14 hours on a flight is never going to make you feel any better. It is different when you do get sick on the flight but they really should have said something before hand and not travelled. Let it be a reminder that if you are not feeling well, don't get onto the flight!

I don't want to revisit the topic but this flight is an example to QF why taking toilets out of aircraft for more seats is NOT a good thing.

As has been reported the people involved were showing symptoms prior to boarding. The selfishness of the people involved is staggering noting the length of the flight and the resultant outcome.

With hundreds of other people adversely affected and possibly infected, surely there should be penalties for the group organisers? If they had been physically abusive there would be consequences, here is a situation where their selfish actions have have severe physical consequences to others.
