QF to wet lease EK 777 to DFW???

Was wondering how Qantas were going to service the increased services and keep FRA going longer than expected, latest rumor is that EK is going to do the SYD-DFW with 77Ws on behalf of Qantas as a wet lease, I give it 5% probability.

That's a big one!

So wet lease - this means EK 'lends' QF the aircraft and QF operate the route (with their flight number and possibly EK's codeshare) with that aircraft? (Not familiar with the term, so I'm guessing).

Also, would a 77W make SYD-DFW let alone DFW-BNE-SYD? There's ETOPS to be considered, and it's a long route. NOU might still get a drop in some time...

ETOPs is not an issue, given the equipment already operating to LAX and there are plenty of airports from there to DFW, the delta between crossing enroute to DFW and landing at LAX is minimal. Range is also not an issue, the 77W having 300 mile great reach than an ER. The more I look at this the more I think it might happen, given the figures for QF8 are not great, the service carried a whole 5T of freight for the month of Sept and averaged 168 passengers.


EK do have a few 77Ls which would be something of a shoe in for this given their extra legs with almost a 3000km range advantage over the 77W or ER. I honestly dont think the mention of 777s without prompting by AJ at the AGM was coincidental.

Gee, that's pretty damning info ... even given the lighter loads expected at that time of year.

Dry lease is what QF operate a lot of aircraft on already, they basically lease the aircraft, a wet lease is aircraft and crew to operate it, like EY were doing with the VA 777 into KUL for a while ex AUH.

I think the symbolism of having the QF livery at DFW is very important to QF, so I doubt very much that this scenario would occur.

I'd say a dry lease would be far more likely, if it included repainting the hulls in QF livery. The problem with that, though, is that QF does not currently have any (?) pilots certified for the 777.

787 and 777 are common ratings

Pilots, Maintenance Staff, Spares, Dispatching software, Cabin Crew training ... the list is endless when bringing a new "type" on-line.

Why would wet-leasing preclude the aircraft being painted in QF colours? There have been numerous examples (going right the way back to the BOAC/SIA Concorde JV) where aircraft have been painted however the operating airline specified.

I doubt it, however doing time on a 777 would be good preparation considering the bridging course is a mere 5 days, gives you a pool of pilots that generate revenue while being ready to take the new aircraft.

ouch - what load factor does that translate to? something in the 50s?

would that make it QFi's worst performing route for load then? the rebates/forgiven fees from DFW must be the only thing keeping it alive

I wonder what the numbers are like to run the entire Qantas International division as a wet lease. Terminate most Australian staff (easy now that it is a separate company), and have long enough lease provisions to make it economical that exterior and interior branding of aircraft can be tailored to Qantas branding. (In a way they have done it long enough with Jet Connect to know it works.)
