Denied seat recline on long haul

I don't ask, however, I will slowly put the seat back, but will ensure that the person behind me has finished their meal service! My comfort is just as important as the person behind me

I kindly inform her that "I am just going to put my seat back a little". She responds curtly with "No, I am still working".
What would you do?

I would have just reclined anyway

i like to keep it simple:

-takeoff/wheels up = full recline
-meal service = upright
-tray cleared = full recline
-top of descent = upright

Like others have said, simply state your intentions and do it accordingly, there is a recline function readily available and it is your right to use at your own discretion, unless told otherwise by aircrew.

I wouldn't have asked, more so just advised, along the lines of "just watch yourself, I am going to recline", to give them the chance to reposition (a sudden recline can be catastrophic for a laptop).

Besides, shouldn't a laptop be on your lap anyway? They don't call them "table tops" or "tray table tops" after all.

Its almost an unwritten that after meals have been served and everything cleared people start to recline to sleep and relax.

I am tall if someone full reclines in front of me, I politely ask them to move it forward a little. If they refuse I can garuntee they will not get sleep as my knees will constantly be moving their seat forwards along with magazine shuffling at about 15-20 minute intervals.

my penny's worth and apologies if I step on anyone's toes...............

I have long legs that touch the seat in front even when fully raised and I find it impossible when the person in front just whacks their seat back. I can sympathise with the person using the laptop as I have had it happen to me without warning whilst my meal tray was there with hot coffee that was spilt .

The OP has the right to use the functions on their seat but so does the person behind which includes the tray.

My response would have been to recline half way back...be a bit comfortable and let her keep working in comfort as well.

My response as the person behind is to put my knees firmly against the seat in front and when it gets to half way hold the pressure and the person in front generally stops...RESULT = 2 x half happy people.

Just because the seat reclines does not give anyone the right to put their seat back whenever they feel like it and it does not give the person behind the right to be rude either when they are asked consisderately.

As decribed many times Y=..cattle class.... jammed in as tight as they can fit us just like cattle in a truck on the way to market so we don't all roll around and get hurt if they stop in a hurry.

The answer..???:

1) accumulate points like crazy and upgrade to PE or J and earn status credits etc to access lounges whenever flying
2) read this website because it sure has hundreds of great tips and tricks for making it happen a bit quicker and easier
3) Win Tattslotto and pay for the seat behind to be empty when you fly
4) rely on points 1 + 2

I am also tall and value full recline. And full recline it is outside meal times*. If everyone reclines then everyone maintains their space. Not my problem if the person behind is tall or obese or whatever else^^. Half the time it would never occur to me to check if the person behind me is working on a laptop. maybe it should, but that's not my first thought. I always recline slowly, but there is no 'phased approach'... just gentle recline (slow enough for anyone watching a movie or whatever to adjust themselves accordingly. As for the knees-in-the-back-of-the-chair-to-prevent-recline - I'm wise to that. As soon as you move your knees it's full recline from me in that split second.

Your gripe is with - (a) the airline for setting the seats too close, not me, and (b) with yourself for picking to fly with an airline offering 31 inch seat pitch. Fly another carrier if you want 34 inches in economy. That you are trying to maintain status, or that you insist on flying Qantas because of any of their 91 reasons (or any of your own that may be in addition to those 91) is your issue not mine (not directed at you personally sumthinfornuthin - 'you' means any pax in general )

*if i am aware there are elderly pax sitting behind who need to access the aisle to use the facilities i will put my seat to ease their movement if I am awake.
^^ obese (business)man sitting behind me on a MEL-SYD flight in business class objected to my seat recline because he couldn't move his try table any closer towards him because his stomach was in the way... tough luck. his 'tap tap tap' on my shoulder (yes he managed to move himself to tap me somehow) was met with a glance at his stomach, a glance at his neighbour's stomach, and a 'I'm sorry'. He followed my eye movements and knew exactly what i meant.

I am 185cm (6 foot one for you old timers) and I generally don't have to recline if I need to sleep.

I bet most of the recliners on this thread 170cm and below!

Your seat is not a support for the passenger behind to use when getting in or out. And they can keep their hands off and their feet away. And if someone in the rear turns into a kicker, I would complain to the cabin crew about the behaviour. Dealing with these issues is more likely to be a Y problem anyway.

No point arguing as recliners always think they are smarter.

Hmmm. I need to get up out of my seat but how how do I get some leverage?
Oh found it and just the right height to get some help getting up.
Now I just need to just yank on this some more.
There I am finally up and no one was inconvenienced one little bit....
