Scams like these

Dagnabbit, got picked-up for not-a-scam!
Booking some accommodation in Switzerland and also two pairs of train tickets … the second attempt to buy train tickets gets my ANZ card blocked! Had to call them up & wait in the queue to get the card unblocked ….

Had a similar experience with ANZ last week, buying Woolworths Gift Cards on Qantas Marketplace.
The unblocking process with ANZ was like an interrogation, and I had to explain in detail why I was purchasing gift cards and was I possibly be scammed. 🙄

As someone quite ancient, I don't think I have a problem with an interrogation if it saves me being scammed.

Hello dear
I know you will be surprised reading from me today but consider this a divine intervention. My name is Donna Thayer, widow with stage 4 cancer.
I saw your email in my search for someone I can trust to assist and utilize the proceeds realized from my estates and investments for charity, basically helping the less privileged, widows and orphans because according to the doctors my days are numbered.
I desire to entrust this amount of money in your care and It is my last wish to use this money strictly for charity hence seek a sincere heart to actualize this as my health no longer permits me.
I am willing to give you a substantial part of the funds for your personal and family needs so reply to my email ([email protected]) and give me your word never to betray my trust. I have to rest now and will explain further when I hear from you.
God bless you,
Donna Thayer.

Well, I got a message from Wise this afternoon to say that my Wise MC had likely been scammed for about $50 with Uber Eats (which I have never used). No idea how that could have happened, though I did use the card in Jakarta recently.

The card has been cancelled and it will be interesting to see whether I get my money back. This puts Wise on notice as far as I'm concerned.

There is a theme to all my spam. All from UK email addresses and all for great offers from UK government or companies. Free solar, medical rebates, bigger sale prices on my car trade-in, discounted hearing aids, discounted car insurance, betting agencies, free retail gifts, car finance, medical negligence payouts, discounted pay TV channels.

Really intrigued because I haven’t been to the UK for more than 15 years and almost no pommies in my contact list (and they don’t use .uk address) and never bought anything retail in the UK. This spam only started in 4th quarter last year. 🤷‍♂️

No spam from mygov any more and nothing related to aussie companies. I still get a lot of stupid cloud storage final bill threats allegedly from the US 🙄

Well, I have to say that Wise have done the right thing and reversed these rogue transactions, putting the money back into my account.

Very quick and with a minimum of fuss, so I'm quite impressed. Better than a regular bank would have IME.

Gives me a little more confidence in Wise generally.

I always thought that banking apps on Android were insecure, so I don't have them on my phone. It might be inconvenient at times, but I'll wear that.

And I also never use public or hotel free wifi, as I've found (nearly to my cost) that scammers can be listening in to your conversations. Better to be safer than sorry and just use phone data connections.

You might say, why not use a VPN (which I do), but some websites won't work with a VPN, unfortunately. Looking at you Qantas (and others).

Android banking apps are secure - no reason to not use them unless your phone is not receiving security updates or is not updated.

Hotel/Public Wi-Fi was definitely something to avoid back in the day, but modern browsers/protocols have made this a non-issue. This video is very handy in explaining why, if you're interested:

VPNs are helpful in avoiding geoblocking or if you're concerned your ISP is spying on your traffic. But if you are using a VPN, you are then having to make a decision if you trust your ISP or your VPN provider more. In either instance, the VPN or ISP is not able to see things like bank details or password.
