Qantas Economy Plus Launching Feb 2026

Actually it was made prior to hitting P1. I waited till I was P1 before attempting seat selection.

I’d say that’s it. I think the booking saves your status and doesn’t refresh - you could have tried removing your FF number and re-adding it.

If it was giving it to you free but not your guest it seems it knows you are P1 so doesn’t charge but for your guest it just refers to your booking.

May well be correct. Will keep that in mind for future bookings.

Slightly OT, but wonder if it is part of economy plus changes.

The seat selection map now seems to show location of any babies on board. Is this new for Qantas? Have seen it on JAL before

This reminds me of a low cost airline feature... is QF going that way now too?
It could be a logical step to introducing something like ‘economy basic’, except that wouod be eating into the JQ market, so I don’t see any incentive for that?

VA in the other hand may need to do something in response. It’s a huge bonus for QF gold members, something which VA cannot replicate if it’s going after the corporate $$.

I think Qantas, having claimed the Australian premium end, wants to win more of the middle ground. To do that, it needs to win (back) customers from Virgin. This is part of that. But the risk, if they're not careful, is to make the back of the airplane look more like a budget carrier, even if it's no different than the current offering. People judge things on a relative/comparative basis, not on absolutes.

So they are charging more for exactly the same thing you could get before..
Yes! Although, fares have come down in real terms. So Y+ is still going to be potentially cheaper than a regular economy fare was (in relative terms) back in the 80s 90s and early 2000s.

Wow! That didn't take long to generate interest. Got the email. But isn't this just like AirNZ where the front seats are bigger spacing and only available to Koru Club members initially?

In my experience this is no longer the case - they board in groups now and if your group hasn't been called your boarding pass will not scan so I see quite a few turned away now
Not my experience at all. Disorganised. If one is in Group 1 or 2 , it can be difficult to get past all the other Group members already lined up. Some are bold enough to say "I'm in Group 4, can I board now?" and are told "OK"!

The only seats that would classify as Y+ now are the extra legroom seats, which even WP have to pay for.

More will get it for free (currently only P1) and the rest can pay for it if they want, in addition to the bundled benefits like priority boarding.

The bulk of the seats will be standard rows with 4” of extra pitch, something QF has never had.

No!

YMMV but my experience is the scanner will not let them board so they are turned away.

I normally arrive at the gate before boarding is called, maybe once it moved to group 3 or 4 it is a free for all?
