Qantas boosts international capacity, wet lease Finnair aircraft

It would appear that, during the wet lease period, the Asia-Sydney flights operated for Qantas will be any one of the AY A330s that just happened to be flying the HEL-BKK/SIN flight that day and will then operate on to SYD for Qantas. Then for the dry lease period, there will be 2 of the AY A330s dedicated to the lease (unless they operate it in a way like Braniff used to operate US domestic Concorde flights).
That could make for some decent connections via BKK - normally it’s cough.

Thing is whats to stop Qantas (or AY) changing their flight schedule to now pair the 2 services up. May not happen at launch (or maybe they do).

Although they could have done so already? They could already pair services if they wanted to, as these services and timing are not new. Perhaps AY is happy to have their Australia traffic travel via HKG or SIN.

AY's services presumably work well for their target market and fit in with aircraft rotations, whilst QF generally don't do southbound day time flights.

Hmm, it looks like QF81/82 have been dropped in lieu of the AY operated. I’m booked QF1/QF82 J in November but they haven’t moved me over yet…. 😳

But I guess I’ll get to try the new AY seat for the first time. Being a night flight, it should be fine.

Edit: apparently QF81/82 will still operate some days and QF291/292 other days.
Just received the flight change notification email from QF for late Nov. SYD+1 and I are now on QF292 SIN-SYD!

Outbound, you can't get a better service for managing jetlag than SYD-BKK during afternoon, overnighting in BKK and then a morning flight to HEL! Inbound, travel via SIN or HKG.
I can see that works for some. Personally, I loathe “sparrows” departures and would rather push through on connecting flights.

Curious if the QF flight SYD-BKK is o/n and then on to HEL? Similarly, a “day flight” ex BKK to SYD will appeal to many.

Granted it is earlier and not as good as the 9am, 11am, 12:30pm or 2pm departures on SQ to Europe, but I guess your body clock would say it's 10:15 or 11:15am (in DST).

But I've done these sort of connections via SIN a few times recently (when personal trips to Australia backed onto work trips elsewhere) and barely even tired, let alone jet lagged after these flights (although it helps that I can, and in fact need to, go home in SIN first to sleep and changeover luggage!).

NP Rabbit Food(TM) and Picnic Cutlery(TM) with a Nordic twist!

NP Kaninmat (TM) and Piknikbestikk(TM) is what you'll hear the FA's announcing.

Speaking of the picnic cutlery - oh! I could live with that, if they'd also give us AY's Ultima Thule glassware!!

I understood the statement differently - namely that it will only be the pilots that extend their flying from HEL to SIN/BKK and then onward to AU, not the aircraft.

Yes, on re-reading that looks right.

Oh… they’re sapping out the 359s that fly to SIN/BKK and replacing them with 330s?

Looks like a some of the flights have switched over as of 30min ago.

With the wording "operated by Finnair for Qantas", wonder if this will affect DSC earning.

Based on past experience, we can expect future DSC T&Cs (if that's what you are talking about) to be ambiguous. "Must be operated and marketed by Qantas." created quite a bit of debate as of course Alliance planes, NOT owned or operated, did count with QF codes. I expect they will earn, but there will be the usual baited breath to see if the first ones post to someone's account.

Of course Qantas may shock us and re-write their future DSC T&Cs to not be ambiguous.

Not my flight - booked on points and during the “meltdown“!

But the flight change notice is giving peeps the option to rebook - that might(?) be the go for DSC flights?

I'm clearly reading this wrong, but it appears those booked on the old QF flights now changed to AY can request a free premium economy upgrade?

What am I missing here?
“Additional fare/taxes do apply” is the key phrase but still an interesting option - especially coming home on QF292!

Qf’s a330s have 269 seats. The finnair aircraft has 230 economy seats.

If a passenger no longer has a seat because there are 39 less Y seats, they can be upgraded to premium economy for free.

Their other options would be to be reaccommodated on another qantas flight (like qf 1).

This is only for pax impacted by the change. If you have been mapped across and did not lose your seat I wouldn’t think the upgrade to premium applies.

Sometimes a bit of ambiguity is a good thing 🙃

I don’t read that as them upgrading anyone for free.

If you are booked in Y and want to upgrade then you can subject to paying the fare difference.

It’s still several months away, so I’d be surprised if anyone is missing out on a seat this far out but the option to upgrade to PE (for a fee) is a good idea.

As someone affected by the changes (albeit in J), PAX are also being given the option to find alternate flights or refund.
